Sacramento DA Thien Ho wants to further criminalize homeless population

Ho is wrong

“Sacramento DA is investigating city’s homeless efforts, says criminal charges are possible,” (sacbee.com, July 19)

Sacramento District Attorney Thien Ho’s proposed solution to the homeless crisis furthers the criminalizatio n of this population, this time by pursuing civil or criminal charges against city officials. It’s disingenuous of the DA to claim that this effort is not against the unhoused, but rather meant to hold elected officials accountable.

If this is the approach to holding people accountable, why not hold funding sources accountable, such as federal, state and county officials whose lack of funding for housing, behavioral health and social services contribute significantly to this crisis? Ho’s proposal is short-sighted and contributes to the fallacy that there are simple solutions to the unhoused crisis. It is definitely not compassionate.

Frances Freitas Sacramento Addiction treatment

“War on drugs can’t hold us back from responding to fentanyl,” (sacbee.com, June 18)

Opioids are the third leading cause of death among teens. As pediatricians, we see teens in clinics and emergency departments grappling with addiction from prescription pain medications. Many teens opt to seek addiction treatment only to face more obstacles.

Buprenorphine is the only Food and Drug Administration-approved medication for individuals 16 and over to treat opioid addiction. Assembly Bill 816 would allow teenagers with opioid addiction to consent to treatment with buprenorphine without parental consent. Many teens facing addiction do not have active parental involvement, and this bill is a crucial step toward evidence-based care.

California has led the nation in many initiatives to expand access to healthcare by allowing adolescents to consent to birth control, STD testing and treatment and mental health care. Addiction treatment should be no different.

Video of driver attempting to pass through redwood forest sparks outrage: ‘[The] disregard for nature is so sad’

A driver in California recently shocked TikTokers by damaging a beloved monument on camera.

The Shrine Drive Thru Tree in Humboldt Redwoods State Park is an iconic redwood tree popular with tourists and nearby residents. It was hollowed out by a fire more than 100 years ago and more recently widened to make it possible to drive through the living trunk — first with horse-drawn carts and later with cars.

The opening is only 7 feet wide, according to the park’s website. That’s a tight squeeze for many vehicles, and drivers have to take care not to harm their cars or the tree by scraping the sides on the way through.

Here are the photos I took as my wife drove through a Redwood drive-thru tree. Again, just make sure your car can make through it before attempting...D ON'T BE AN IDIOT:

....native snakes... ???

Quote
I quit my real estate job in Indiana and moved to Florida to hunt pythons. Here's what my typical day looks like now.

By hunting pythons, I'm using my passion for snakes to make a difference in the world. People don't always understand why I hunt pythons when I love snakes. But because of my fascination with them, I'm not afraid of the pythons.

Burmese pythons are native to Southeast Asia and are an invasive species in Florida.

In 1992, Hurricane Andrew demolished a python breeding facility, sending about 900 pythons into the same general area of the Everglades. People who bought Burmese pythons as pets and let them go when they became too big to feed, house, and handle have also contributed to the problem.

These massive reptiles have become the apex predator in Florida, and they have a voracious appetite.

That's why you'll no longer see some animals, like rabbits, foxes, raccoons, and opossums, in certain parts of the Everglades. Burmese pythons aren't picky eaters, either, so they'll also eat birds and other animals, especially as their main food sources dwindle.

As Yosemite crowds get worse, bus service from Fresno nearly out of gas.

‘Never seen anything like this’: Yosemite visitors are waiting 4 hours to enter a packed park.

Unfortunately, things are moving in the wrong direction. As the park's overcrowding problem gets worse — and more people might be inclined to take the bus and avoid the driving and parking hassle — YARTS service between Fresno and Yosemite has been greatly reduced and is on the verge of disappearing altogether.

Golden Retriever Supports Sexual Assault Survivor on Witness Stand in Minnesota Courtroom

A Golden Retriever recently accompanied a sexual assault survivor to the witness stand in St. Cloud, Minnesota. It was the first time a facility dog provided comfort to a witness in a Minnesota courtroom.

Golden Retriever comforts sexual assault survivor during trial
According to the Star Tribune, a dog named Nova provided comfort to a 15-year-old girl in a Stearns County District courtroom. The canine companion remained by the girl’s feet during five hours of testimony about the sexual assault 39-year-old Jairo Missael Fernandez Sorto inflicted on her over several years. Ultimately, Fernandez Sorto was sentenced to a 30-year prison sentence for rape.

Assistant County Attorney Jamie Reinschmidt, who prosecuted the case, said that the survivor “would not have had the emotional stamina to focus on the questions as thoughtfully and as clearly as she was able to” without Nova’s presence.

“Nova just gave her a calming effect, which obviously was the desired effect,” he said.
Furthermore, Reinschmidt believes that without Nova’s support, it would have been so difficult for the girl to testify that “we would have had to dismiss the case.”

Unfortunately, not everyone was on board with a furry bystander in the courtroom. The defense argued that the dog would “elicit undue sympathy among the jurors,” according to the Star Tribune.

Thankfully, Judge Laura Moehrle ruled that the Goldie could attend the trial.

“The court finds that Nova’s presence would assist [the girl] in reducing her anxiety and increase her sense of calm, and thus increase her ability to testify completely and accurately,” the judge wrote. “The helpfulness of Nova’s presence to [the girl] outweighs any potential risk of prejudice to the defendant.”

There were some parameters around the dog’s participation, however. Nova had to be out of the jury’s view during the entire testimony. Nova’s handler, Keli Tautman, sat on the floor next to the dog and the girl during the proceedings.

Divers encounter giant 'doomsday fish' of Japanese legend off Taiwan coast

As they are rarely found in shallow waters, oarfish are viewed as mysterious and intriguing creatures and are often tied with local legends. These species can reach lengths of over 36 feet and likely contribute to the sea serpent legends that have endured throughout history.

In Japanese culture, the oarfish is revered as a "Messenger from the Sea God's Palace" and has gained a reputation as a harbinger of impending doom. Their mere presence is believed to be a sign of upcoming natural disasters, such as earthquakes and tsunamis.

According to National Geographic, six oarfish were spotted just days before a deadly 2017 earthquake in Surigao, Philippines.

Unlikely theories: Scientific experts have dismissed these claims as folklore, noting that there is no substantial evidence to support them.

In 2019, Japanese scientists released their findings after looking into over 220 earthquakes between 1928 and 2011 and comparing them against the 336 cases in which sightings of the fish were reported in local media.

"We began our research thinking that the appearance of deep-sea fish could become supplementary information for disaster prevention, but now we know that's not the case,” said Yoshiaki Orihara, associate professor of Solid Earth Geophysics at Tokai University. “There's no need for alarm if one appears. Knowing that it is difficult to predict earthquakes, we want people to be prepared in their daily lives."

Unlicensed Driver Does A Wild Hit-And-Run In Florida

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y0XFkVhT8Ks

We bring to you today a crazy video compilation of police responding to a hit-and-run accident, tracking down the fleeing party, then hearing all about how the unlicensed driver who caused the collision was really the victim. In other words, it’s just another day in the stressful life of a law enforcement officer.

Watch New Mexico police stop two men from carjacking a mom and her child.

It seems like many people who break the law when caught know how to instantly portray themselves as the victim. This kind of thing sadly is becoming too common, so sadly it’s not entirely shocking to see this woman who ran a stop sign, absolutely creamed another car, and kept on driving then proceeded screamed at a police officer when caught that someone hit her, not the other way around. This is why having a dashcam could help sort things out if there’s ever a question of who was at fault in an accident.

Thankfully, in this situation the police know what really happened right from the beginning. Instead of the woman’s tears working to portray her as a helpless victim, they confirm that she doesn’t want to take any responsibility . Considering she did a hit-and-run, that’s really not shocking.

It turns out this woman initially ran from a traffic stop. As she told the officer, she panicked when she saw the cop car turn on its lights behind her. Since she doesn’t have a license and she was driving, she knew what would happen if pulled over. So she ran a stop sign, hit another car, and just kept going. But she keeps insisting in the video that the other driver hit her, so she’s actually the victim. Who even does that?

Fortunately, it seems the other driver wasn’t seriously injured in the crash. The front end of his crossover is absolutely demolished, but the passenger cell held up against the Saturn wrecking ball, so that’s good. Hopefully the guy doesn’t have any long-term difficulties because of this woman who just doesn’t like accepting responsibility .

'I drove at 100mph because my electric car was running out of charge' A driver caught speeding at 101mph told police they were speeding because they were rushing home to charge their electric car. The speeding motorist insisted that their EV was about to run out of battery.

Here are some specs of pushing an EV at full power:

"Battery: 100 kWH. Consumption: ~ 500 kW. Time to empty ~ 12 minutes. Average speed should be close to 150 mph, for 1/5 hour, so about 30 miles at full power..."

AMC Movie Theater Patron Brutally Attacked In Dispute Over Reserved Seats

Florida detectives are searching for an attacker who beat a 63-year-old man who asked him to move from reserved seats into an adjacent space.

The attack happened on July 10 at an AMC Theater at 2315 N. Federal Highway in Pompano Beach, Florida, shortly before 10 PM. The movie the victim purchased tickets for was not identified.

Broward County Sheriff’s Office released video of the incident, The attacking suspect is shown violently shoving the elderly man up against a railing, then landed several hard blows to his face.

Anyways, here's the last movie I watched at the theater. I like the 80s retro aspect but not a good movie overall IMO. Nice theater and the "reserved" reclining seats are nice though:

Strange Video Of A White Woman Breaking Into A Black Man’s Apartment

Online users are scratching their heads after watching a viral video of a white woman refusing to leave a Black man’s apartment. The clip shows the woman barricading herself in the residence and how the police handled the situation, which many viewers thought was insufficient.

According to the Atlanta Black Star, someone shared the video on Tuesday via Twitter.

“I just know she’s Ultra MAGA,” the user wrote along with the clip.

In the video, which many deemed strange, the white woman is shown attempting to enter the residence as the Black man tries to hold her back.

“I want to clear my name,” she says in the clip. “I know I won.”

The woman started yelling several numbers and mentioned a “$400 house cleaning bill.” The whole time, the Black man tries to remove her from the premises, which gets complicated when she successfully closes the door behind them.

“Get out of my f**king house,” he yells in the clip.

Things escalated when the white woman grabbed a backpack that appeared to belong to the Black man. Another man then enters the apartment and tries to remove the white woman.

“That’s ours,” the woman yells while holding a broken picture frame.

“It’s fake,” she yells later, as the men try to stop her from hurting herself on remnants of the frame.

Another clip shows police intervening. Several officers tried to hold the woman down as she clung to the inside of the Black man’s apartment.

“You’re breaking the law,” the woman screamed while detained.

Chinese man who exploited kids in Malawi for racist videos found guilty of charges

A Chinese man who made global headlines for paying Malawian children to appear in racist videos has been convicted of multiple charges and banned from the African country for life.

Background: Lu Ke, 27, who also goes by Susu, was first exposed in a BBC Africa Eye documentary that dove into the sale of videos that featured Black children chanting racist remarks. In one video, the children can be seen and heard chanting “I am a Black monster” and “My IQ is low” in Chinese.

Lu Ke allegedly paid the children half a dollar to star in the videos, which were then sold on Chinese social media. He reportedly made up to 380 videos a day and sold each of them for up to $70.

Amid public outrage, Lu Ke illegally fled to neighboring Zambia. However, he was extradited quickly and formally charged with multiple offenses in Malawi.

The latest: On Thursday, a Malawian court found Lu Ke guilty of his charges, including child trafficking and procurement of children for use of entertainment. He was sentenced to 12 months in prison and ordered to leave the country afterward.

Lu Ke faced a total of 14 charges, which also included illegal use of the internet and harmful social practices. Having already served 12 months in police custody, Lu Ke was immediately immediately released but must leave Malawi in seven days and never return.
