Title: Need some pointers to white bass or crappie fishing area in MN
Post by: DuMa on June 22, 2020, 06:55:30 AM
I know that white bass is not all that popular in mn or else the j4 folks would all go there and fish them all out but I'm sure there is a pond somewhere that holds them right?  I mean in mn hmong area.

I'm scoping out a few but I need more.  Like for instance.  Stillwater is not too far.  This hmong guy be fishing by a power plant. I'm not too sure about eating the fish there but to be able to put myself on a white bass, now that's history in the making.

And no, I'm not taking a 4 hours drive to hook up with hmongrock for some white bass.  It is still covid season ya heard?

Only thing my uncle knows are them ponds.   He's a retired ocean fisherman from the deep and been doing it all of his life till he retires.  Retiring age is no car so without a mode of transportation, all you got are them land of 10,000 lakes to choose from and they typically have your typically fresh water gills, crappies and large mouth.

The guy lived both in wis and mn and does not know about any good fishing hole.  I fished with him before.  It was the first time I uses a bait shop bought leeches and caught my first large mouth on it.  In cali, they don't sell leeches for some odd reason.  Maybe illegal for invasive species I dunno.

I want to put him on something different.  Maybe a walleye, suger, white bass or even them little smelt.  Gotta put him on something other than starter fish cuz the guy literally fishes on a dock, next to a bunch of kids who uses their mickey mouse rod and reel.

I think the guy deserves a last hoorah before he does cuz at 90 years old, you can't expect for next year to put him on some fish.  It has been 7 years I haven't been back to the midwest.

This trip is all about him and spending time with him before he dies.  I might not have this same opportunity for next year.

I haven't caught me a white bass either.  Striper, that I caught many and plentiful but white bass intrigues me.  I want to do it on a live minnow and artificial lure.  If covid wasn't here, I'll take him to wis and fish behind hmongrock house and catches all of his wipers.   :2funny:

Had it not for covid, we would of gone to wis and fish there instead.  He got families there so killing all kinds of birds with one stone.

I probably know more about white bass fishing spots by a bridge in wis than I do in mn.  The goal is not to catch a bucket full.  The goal is just to catch one and eat that sucker up.  I already know what stripe bass tasted like.  A wiper or hybrid or white bass, that I do not know unless we buy them at the local fish market and those are not fresh kill.

Mn trip this year.  Gonna be there by Thursday next week.   Fish and bbq and maybe mistake lake casino is all I'm gonna do.  Anything else like checking out protestors and what not is fantasy thinking.  I'm just sad that there will not be any j4 or flooding with hmong refugee from all over this year.  Not club either.  Gotta go back to basic and just do what I can over there to kill time.  I already did my covid testing with antibodies last week and still waiting for the results either today or tomorrow.  Got to make sure before I bring the nasty over to mn.

Glad you mentioned the weather.  I haven't even packed yet and I already looked at them extended weather so looks like by next week and beyond, a thunderstorm weather is coming.

That means lay low at home and fish when I am able.  Hot weather humid in the early 90s expected and adding a thunderstorm in that type of heat will make the air smelling funky.  Gonna pack light for a raining day schedule.  Rain or shine, I'll push for a fishing trip.  If I can fish under a bridge during raining weather, that'll be cool too.   Hope I don't get sick.

I'm still adding more spots to fish in the local twin cities area.

Bro

My advice is: don’t target whitebass
Its already too late
You need to be setting up stinkbait
And targeting catfish O0

Hot weather next week is primetime catfishing

if anything that I do know is catfishing off the mississippi.   But where is a public access that is safe enough to set the pole for them big river monster is the question at hand.

Well with catfish at that size from the mississippi, you will need to bring in them big reels.  I don't think my uncle got any real that is bigger than crappie.

Not sure if he wants to eat catfish.  Them fish are tasty if cooked right but toxic as hell too since they are bottom feeders.  Maybe it is a superstition that eating catfish will make your leg hurt or something like that.  Maybe folks with an underlying condition should not eat them toxic critter.  I know a friend who ate turtle and got big time gout.

Where ever their is rapids and baitfish, you should be able to catch smaller white bass during the summer months.  Except for mid August as since they generally retreat to deeper water for colder temps.

That lure though.  We got those lures here in cali but they are much much bigger and we use them to throw for them ocean halibut and rock fish like ling cods.  Will surely pick some up when I'm there.  Next research is to find a local tackle store and live bait shop cuz walmart, well they don't have everything good you need.  They just have enough to survive for the beginners.

Ah good information.  white bass are like stripe bass.  We also target them in moving currents but we have tides over here so the moving currents and movements varies by the hours, basing upon the tides.

IF you have a boat, you can basically have a better advantage to good spots.  Fishing off the shore, well that's the fisherman's honey hole and with that, no one wants to share cuz here in cali, once the word is out, they be joking that by next weekend, it'll be J4 there.   :2funny:

Right at the dam
I never catch alot of them
If you go mile a half or so down the dam
More success

I like to fish 2-4 miles down stream
Calmer water

They not picky
Reel in your pole, and jerk your pole up every once in a while

Like i say
You miss the spring run

No guarantees

Season may be over and that is a given.  If it was still in season and with J4, it gives the hmong something to do while doing a refugee run to mn from all over the place.

OH well, I'll just focus on crappie and white bass is a bonus fish.  My uncle can do the blobber minnow style while I'll just cast lures for white bass.  That first video I posted was a hmong guy fishing in mankato area and he was banked fishing with all kinds of species were caught.  That is what I'm talking about.  If you go after one species, you may skunk but if your lure or bait is versatile,  you will not skunk as you will catch other species for a fun time.

I would avoid fast current
Look for slack sandy down tree

Thats where i can them by the bucket and cooler

Different techniques for different spots...if you find baitfish.  Chances are a school of white bass is following or holding those baitfish there.  Just because there is a dam, there isn't always a guarantee that the fish will hold there.

White bass ain’t the only one chasing the baitfish
Fishing at the dam
You will catch all kinds of fish

Thats why we target the run

My favorite is: calm water, down tree, sandy area

I used to have a resident mn driver license just to get my resident fishing license for cheaper.

Resident is 25bux?

non resident, I now pay $51

I won't be fishing the whole year but just the 2 weeks that I'll be there.

There goes this one lake or pond in the city itself.  Minneapolis.  They got big pike

Although the comments have been disabled just today, I was able to read a few yesterday to find this location.  Isle of island or something like that.  Smack in the middle of the city itself I believe.
