So here is my situation...I'm currently working as a IS Desktop Engineer at a company that sells health insurances. I get paid 52K a year and my annual review is coming due. A good buddy of mine from a old job that I worked at has referred me to a job opening they have at his company he is working for. They are hiring for a IS Systems Engineer and pays $60k-70k a year plus quarterly bonuses.
Could I get anyone's view on this if I should still stay where I'm at or give it a shot. I've only been at my current job for 6 months now. Is it always wise if they ask why I'm job hoping that I say I was referred to by a good buddy who works in their company?

Go for the interview and see if you like this new boss and company.
Who's going to train and develop you more? Be with that person.
Which company has better brand value and training program? Be with that company.
Which company has a brighter outlook and a better culture? Be with that company.
Who's going to pay you more now and in the future? Be with that company.
It's hard to advise given we don't know what you are prioritizing.. . I'll say this, it's all about learning and growing when you are young. If you somehow impress the movers and shakers of your business, and they pull you into the inner circle, then stay there for continual development and growth. If you are kept outside of the inner circle, then keep looking for better growth opportunities.
You are currently 6 months in. If you leave, you'll be marked there, and you'll also make your boss look like an idiot for hiring you. What this means is the next job you go to, you better stay there for at least 3 years. If you hop jobs every 6-18 months, have a good reason. I hire people, and I wouldn't hire anyone who cannot keep a steady job longer than 2-3 years. You are what we call a HIGH FLIGHT RISK and you make us look bad...so no matter how awesome you are, we aren't willing to gamble unless we need you for 6 months. If that's the case, we won't spend a single penny to develop you.

Before you can get sound advice, you'd have to explain a little more about the new company. What industry is it in? Is it a big or small company? How big is their IT dept?

Money talks n bullchit walks.
You have to weigh it out for yourself. Everything is a hit and miss like a lucky gambler. But I'd do it for the money. Like from same industry, hop from McDonald's to Burger King to White castle and then you level up to McDonald's manager then bk manager then WC manager. Your money goes up is what talks. By the end of the day, you stop because you are comfortable with where you are at.
Sometimes job security is more important. Sometimes the thrill of a solid resume. Whatever the case, you go for what you are worth.

Yup. A friend and I were once asked by a company to jump ship and go do IT work for them. It would have been a 50% increase in salary too. Problem was, this was a porn company.

I kind of want to change from being a Desktop Engineer to a Systems Engineer. I always been into servers and managing them. Well when we talk about bling bling money is the thing, we all want more. But I want to spend the next 40 years doing something I enjoy and waking up to...
