That's one of the big reason's why we started the Hmong Sportsmen Club, to ease the tension between cultures. We've been working with the WI-DNR and so far its good progress. Just trying to get Hmong back in the woods and enjoy the sport they love so much.
Give it a shot this year man, even if its just squirrel hunting. O0

Rite on man! Looks like a good beginning to a new season.
I'll try and upload my photos of my deer & elk I got this past weekend. Bummer I didn't have a bear tag cause I got withing 70 yards of a black bear. I also needed a few more elk tags, saw so many... Rifle season is just around the corner!
I wanna go elk hunting one day. Looks like fun. Plus I wouldn't mind those big antlers. :D
See any big elk?
-
Good shots, Addison. I haven't bow hunted this season yet. Got a license for it but haven't had the time to wait out there.
-
Biggest elk seen was a 5x6. I saw him on 2 seperate occasions on 2 different days. Some gal I ran into got a big 6x6 bull. They were packing it out. The rut started a little late this year so I didn't get to hear too much action. I tell you, elk hunting can spoil you. You have to try it before you retire. It's hard work but so rewarding. Lots of people come from all over the states to hunt here. I get to meet folks from NY, CA, OK, PA, you name it, they come in sworms and they stay for weeks at a time. I love it!
I wanna do a DIY elk hunting trip one day. No guides. It's more rewarding and challenging.
Up here I hunt public land only that gets pressured heavily. Just gotta do your homework and figure out where and when everyone else is hunting and you'll find the deer. Even if it requires you to walk through a swamp.
:idiot2: :2funny:

Nice O0 Way to tell the story with pics. How far did she run? What ever happened to that buck you took a pic of?
Looks like she got to just to the edge of the cornfield. If you look at the first and last pictures, you'll see the woods near the edge of the cornfield where she's found.
-
From where I shot her and where I found her was only about 40-50yds. I put a bad shot (gut shot) and had to leave her over night to recover the next morning. As for the buck pics, had a few encounters with different bucks this year but none giving me a good shot. A few more weeks and the rut will be in full effect and bucks will be cruising every where.
:D ;D O0

Big ass red fox squirrel there.

It's always a good thing to let the animal sit for atleast 6-8 hours un-pressured if you're not sure of the shot placement. Also remember that if you wound an animal and you lose track of the blood trail, chances are good that they'll always go down hill or to the nearest thick cover. By following these two tips, you should never lose a wounded animal.
Thanks for all those tips. I don't have the patience to wait 6-8 hrs. But I wouldn't mind waiting 30 minutes. Then I'll tiptoe after it.

True, I had a bull elk do a circle on me only to find it 50 yards from where I shot it. Crazy animals.
I was lost in the woods once. I found myself circling to the same spot 3 times! ;D ;D

2010 bow season has been pretty fun for me this year. This year I shot and killed 3 deers with none being bucks. Yesterday went out on unit 77m in ozaukee county and had a 180lb buck come in at 35 yards. The area I sit is to thick to get an arrow off at 20 yards so watch the little 6 walk away. That was at 710am. Then at 840am came in 3 does. Got this one in the picture. Died 50 yards from where I shot it. When I got down my stand and glance at the area where it ran, I noticed a white belly. Went over there and check the shot placement, right where the shot was suppose to be. The deer did brake my arrow and I couldn't find my broad head end. Wat surprise me was I got down 15 mins after the shot and the deer was already dead. Now waiting on any size antler to come by.

Ill say 90% of the time when a deer is shot they run back to where they came from. Reason is they were safe all the way until they were shot. That's my .02!

Great pics AL O0 You get out alot. Are al those pics from this year alone?
All from 2010 O0 I just need to connect on one of these bad boys before the WI gun deer opener next weekend. ;D
I'd like to get my hands on this bad boy I call "G-10", cos he reminds me of a gangsta regulating on all those smaller bucks when they come on his turf. Definitely one of the most dominate bucks I've seen this year. :D

Went and found this crazy rub on public land at kettlemoraine north. Sat yesterday morning with no luck and Saturday evening and seen 2 deers and no buck behind them. Took this button buck that I thought was a doe. Aimed for the kill zone but arrowed it in the neck. Dropped right where it stood. The 2nd deer was confuse of what happend. Stayed around weezing and stomping its feet until It finally noticed me and then took off. Buddies had extra tags to fill. That's 4 deers for me this year. I shot a deer every weekend I hunted this year. But I did go 3 years straight without letting an arrow fly so I guess I'm making it up.

Yea I am hunting hausehalter lane! Damn maybe we are seeing the same exact rubs. Well if that's where you got yiur pictures of the bucks u posted I hope you get him... it was my first time hunting that spot as I just found it last week. The only bad thing is there's so many meekas in that area. Luckly for me there was no one around from the turnaround to the first curve/turn. My buddy shot at a doe Saturday morning too but arrow only penatrated about 5 inches. Pretty sure he hit the shoulder blade. No blood to be found and arrow was stick in the ground 80 yards from where he shot. But yea most of our productive spots are around ggg and ss too...

There's always alot of meeka and Hmong hunters in that area, along with deer. Its not a huge area but once you get to the end where the circle parking lot is at there's a bunch of areas to hunt. Have you seen any bucks lately?
We also gun hunt there and its a zoo. :idiot2:

I dontIt don't matter if we hunted the same area or spot... bowhunting espeacially, If I were to see another hunter around my area I would go hunt somewhere else. Reason is its public and respect the other hunter around you. Now these days people would kill there own race for fu***** up there hunt. But nope havnt seen a buck yet. Only huntedfor 5 hours this year in kewaskum! Witch buck in the picture did u get on ur camera that is in the area. Its ok if u don't wanna tell. But just curious cuz last year I seen one of those bucks on ss sheboygan side! Good luck all as gun season is coming fast and like I said before when its time to wear orange I tend to target crappies or spend time with the family

All my trail cam bucks are within a few miles of the area both Fondy and Sheboygan counties. O0 And you do bring up a good point of being respectful to other hunters in the same area. I do the same and especially when I see another tree stand or even a trail cam. After all if it was mine I wouldn't want it stolen. If you're hunting a spot with another hunter, you're in the wrong place anyways if there's already hunting pressure. LOL.
I'll be back out for the late season, maybe I'll bump into you. Good luck.
*On a side note, there's a lot of Milwaukee Hmong hunters in that area. LOL. We've been hunting that area now for 10+ years and the past 3yrs we've seen more and more Hmong hunters. Mostly small game tho.
-
Theyre all sleeping :D
The squirrels we have here are mostly pine squirrels with a few albert squirrels. The larger one is the albert, they come in black or grey colors. I dont eat them but my mom has been asking. Got to keep my babysitter happy O0

My big game hunting season is over. I shot 1 cow, 1 bull, 1 buck, and 1 doe.I had to bring the bull back all by myself. 600lbs of elk and 1.2 miles away from the nearest road, I about broke my back for the 3rd time in 5 consective years :D Here's some pics from my last trip out. I'll post pics of my bull later if I remember.
My cow, left shoulder shot as a right handed shooter. When you have 16 eyes staring at you within 70 yards, you can't move. So I moved my gun from my right shoulder to my left shoulder and made a nice shot that put her down about 30 yards away.
Sounds like a successful season to me! Congrats! O0
I know only a handful of hunters who shoot the way you do. Its all on eye dominance. And that's a tough spot to be in when there's that many eyes watching you. Good work man!
-
Dang... the head on that beast is HUGE man! Looks like it could eat you alive! LOL. Congrats! Great kill! O0
Story?

I'm sure everyone has something to share, so thought I'd sticky this as my first move as the Outdoors Forums MOD

Turkey Hunting. Hope this helps.

Turkey scouting, the pictures were from awhile ago when I used to bring my camera. I seem to suck at turkey hunting:
1st day this year my buddy and I scare one that flew out of a small valley that we had just walked through.
2nd day I set up, heard em gobble and went over to take a look. I call and see the roost tree, then they fly to where my set-up was, seriously right next to my backpack :-[ (I finally got to call and see them respond back though, pretty cool. I saw them shock gobble when herons flew by squawking too).
3rd day they flew into the trees right above me and my brother, we were hunting with .22 caliber air rifles since there is no discharge of gunpowder firearms within that river valley (private property was just up the hill). If I had a bow, we would have been eating turkey :'(
Anyway here are the pics!
Scouting this year, fresh tracks in mud:

Quail a few years back, we did okay this year too! The first pics are from a scouting trip:

In flight after I spooked them:
This was from opening day, we saw nothing all day until we were leaving at sunset. There were like 50-60 birds, these guys jumped first and I couldn't reload fast enough to get the others. I was also shocked at how many birds flew out of the bushes where I saw nothing before:

This'll be the last one for the night, last year's Band-tail Pigeon hunt. We had a very bad week of weather before the 1 week season began. Limit is 2 birds per day, 4 birds possession. Band-tails are one of the hardest birds to knock down. They fly fast, high, and are really hard to kill. I got my only one on day 2 of the season. My dad and I hit a flock first thing in the morning of about 70 birds and missed every single shot. They were way too high, maybe 3 inch magnums would have reached em. The second group that came by us was fewer, like 15 birds, but they flew lower. My dad missed his and I got mine. Saw no more that day, and didn't hunt again that season. Wish we weren't so busy nowadays so we could hunt these guys more.
My younger brother's Integra at the parking spot, as you can see we're hunting evergreen forest:

Okay one last one, I don't deer hunt since my dad doesn't. The only deer that I've ever got was a fork in MN two autumns ago. Memorable, because I couldn't believe how cold it could be while wearing all those clothes, and how boring it is to sit in a treestand lol! We waited so long we even saw a turkey. Opening day gun season is a battlefield in MN.
Anyways this is the only deer I photographed this year while hunting with a buddy. It was a doe we spooked from a creek bottom. Down here, we hunt Columbian Blacktail Deer. The main technique is to sit on a ridge and glass at the hills around you. When you see one, you snipe it with your rifle from a hilltop away. The most popular cartridge was the 7mm Rem. Magnum. I think now everyone is moving to .270 or 25-06. I kind of want a .243 myself because the ammo's cheap (you have to use expensive non-lead ammo in condor regions).
Can you spot the deer?
On another note, while squirrel hunting, my white buddy and I heard some banging on trees. We were scared it was a bear since we only had shotguns. In a bit a nice 4 pointer came out and didn't even see us (good size for public land anyway). We let him walk away without ever knowing we were there.
-
Roc - Those are some amazing photos! Great job and keep them coming. Never been quail hunting before but looks fun.
O0
-
They are a lot like chukar, flying fast and low. They prefer to run also, so hunting solo is very very challenging. I wish I could have a dog, but my parents are not animal people (there's one being given away for free on another hunting forum, already house and kennel trained, naturally birdy, only needs to learn how to point... dang). Yea I'll look around to see what other pics I can find.
-
What kind of camera do you have? Amazing quality O0 Where you from bro?
-
I'm from southern california and hunt both southern and central cali. Gotta lot of family in MN so we frequent the midwest every few years, that's where I got my only deer.
As for camera, it depends on what I'm doing. If I'm scouting I bring my back-up pro gear (I'm a photographer by trade). That's usually a Canon Rebel XSi or XTi with my 70-200 f/4 L Lens. Otherwise if I'm actually hunting I'll just bring along a point and shoot and do some editing later in photoshop just to put some punch in it that's lost.
For scouting any DSLR with a telephoto lens would be fine, all brands are high quality (I started with Canon so I just continue that way). For a cheap good quality camera I recommend the either the Canon SX110is or the SX120is. You can find a killer deal on a used one (amazon.com is very good quality for used items). Biggest thing is to learn a few basic rules of photography and you'll be surprised at what you can do with a normal camera.

Here's a hunt from a few years back. We were hunting band-tail pigeon but ran into a covey of mountain quail.
My dad and I at the truck, it had snowed in the night before:
My non-hunting brother who we drag along as we began to hike below the snow line:
I saw the covey first and got off a double. I chased em up the mountainside and got two with one shot as well as a single. 5 for me total. My dad got 3 as he cut them off the other side of the hill. Best day hunting these guys, the most beautiful birds I have hunted. I was so tired from running up that hill after them that my knees gave out when I came down. I had to sit and massage my muscles before continuing haha!
My gun next to the birds:
Wish I could show you guys a more detailed shot of what they look like. Maybe this next season:

Where you from bro?
-
MN, not too far from you. Sheboygen right?
Yep. Hows deer hunting in MN? It's gotta be pretty good up north near the border. :D
-
Up north I hear great things of Monsters but haven't ventured that far north. Southern MN I've seen quite a few monsters too, biggest that I've seen was a :o in my eyes...pushing upper 180! The base on that deer was huge! I've done majority of my hunting in WI, south of rice lake. There are big deer there but what I've come to find is that if neighbors don't hunt then you won't get much either.
Nice. I have yet to see a buck of that caliber in the wild while hunting public land. O0
-
Sorry I read what I wrote and didn't type it correctly :D, it was my brother-in-laws group that shot the deer. I only saw it mounted and its HUGE! It was on public too!
Still a legend in anyone's book IMO. That's a buck of a lifetime! Congrats to your BIL's group. O0

Dove hunting season opened on Sept. 1 here in WI. Opening day was a success for the wife and I, along with our good friend Rick (first time dove hunting)

addison, which kind of gun is that? I Browning 22? nice bolt. Where do you hunt? By kettlemoraine, jackson marsh? I know you're from sheyboygan and are there any places to hunt around sheboygan? I'm not from there but just wondering because we Milwaukeans got the west and northwest side to oursleves without traveling far. My friend and I go dove hunting in Jackson, and he's going there this weekend for ducks. I'm not, but doing some squirrel in wakesha this weekend. Alot of squirrels this year? I think the squirrels this year are big but i've seen alot of the small ones, but not alot of squirrels. I think over hunt them last year thats why not alot of squirrels.
And nice geese. did you use decoys? Geese call? I saw alot of ducks last two week when I went geese hunting but no luck. The geese flew too high, but the ducks fly just right. Good luck this weekend.
-
squirrel population in the north and south kettle seems pretty dead.. The nut trees barely have any nuts on them too.

Lots of questions here. I'll try my best to answer them all in order. O0
I shoot a Mossberg 817 (.17HMR) bolt-action for small game.
My home forest is the Northern Kettle Moraines, which I hunt often. As for places around Sheboygan, the Kettle Moraines would be the closest big lot of public land available.
I've hunted Jackson Marsh before and it's a very productive area. There's plenty of wildlife there but alot of pressure from other hunters.
From what I've seen the squirrel population hasn't changed much where I hunt. Some areas hold more than others but you just have to limit yourself to keep the population alive and well.
As for geese hunting, we didn't use any decoys, just calls, since there was a group of geese 100yds from us already. Caught us off gaurd actually. lol.
Good luck and be safe this season. Feel free to ask questions. O0

[img]http://a3.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-
I been to a couple of places and the hickory nuts are not blooming that's why no squirrels this year. You might want to wait till the fall when there are no more leaves and go spy on the last tree with nuts on them and wait. I know a place full of squirrels but no chance of shooting them. too many trees and leave. You will have to be an asassin to get one. Just wait till the leaves fall then go and wait. I find it easy at this time to just sit and call them out. the little squirrels do not come running like the Hon Tuu, so it kinda of hard to get a call back from the squirrels. My dad they went to kettle moraine by eagle and it's dead. The closest place to Milwaukee is lowell unit in Germantown.
Hey addison,
you are right about Jackson marsh. There are alot of people there hunting for ducks, geese and others so it's a first come first basics. two weeks ago I went out and saw over 200 ducks. Be safe you guys.

Spooked gray squirrel so it ran into its tree hole with the head peeking out. Stood behind a tree for about 20 mins, but it wouldn't come out. Red squirrels decided to stopped by gray squirrel's hole and duck with it. Gray squirrel got mad and got out and BANG!...dead. Red squirrel was looking down thinking, "WTF just happened..?" BANG.. Red squirrel dead..

While you guys are chasing deer, I'm still hunting squirrel! Went out with a couple buddies, two of them were noobs and had never killed anything. Long story short, I've never heard so many gunshots go off in my life and so little to show for it! Cracked me up like crazy how bad they were missing, good thing they were still fresh from hunter safety class. They shot more than a box of ammo and only ended up with 3 squirrels :2funny: I borrowed a Marlin 795 .22LR and was able to get one between the crazyness. The dumb thing was I had already shot the squirrel but it was still clinging to the branch, my close friend came over and shot it with his shotgun while I was waiting for it to fall >:( When I cleaned him I found only 3 BB wounds and found 2 of the BB's, guess my friend missed pretty badly.
The steep incline goes for almost a mile:

Roc - Great way to take'em out squirrel hunting as one of their first hunting experiences. Kudos to you bro. O0

Thanks addison, they were pretty excited. One of the guys is still too squeamish to hold the squirrels. When he went to pick up his squirrel, it wasn't dead yet and jumped when he tried to pick it up. He screamed like a little girl and jumped like 10 feet hahaha. We tried to convince them that you had to eat the heart of your first squirrel :2funny: but they didn't fall for it.

Great job addison.
I saw two doe from the distance and did not get a second to aim because they were running too fast through the forest. Our group of 12 got 2 buck and 1 doe. My father's group of 11 got 6 deers. Great weekend overall. I talked to people and they said there were no deers this year.

According to the WIDNR deer numbers for opening weekend, deer harvest was up 6% across the state.

It's good, you were suppose to come join us (Fisher) this year ;)
I keep telling myself one of these years I'll come elk hunting, but it's gonna have to wait a few more years. It's still a dream hunt to come to God's country.
Feel free to share more pictures/videos. I'd love to see them. O0

Fisher, how long is the elk season and how much are tags for non-residents? I assume there's no over-the-counter tags and one must draw?

What period do you guys hunt elk? I would like to do a rifle elk hunt in the next year or so.
Doing research on CO now...

I just went out yesterday and shot these three. The ground was covered in snow and it was pouring snow flaking. The weather was great for the morning because it was not that bright with the snow reflecting anything unusual. I got to the place at 7 am and the darkness was fading. I walked on a made path by DNR and heard a cracking sound. I try to look for the place but it was too locate the sound because there were many trees. I sneaked infront of the squirrel and it saw me. I must remind you guys that the snow was not thick and you can hear the sounds of your feet stepping on the snow and leaves underneat it. I looked up and saw the grey and it stuck its head to look at me then it climbed higher and ran to the furthest branch trying to escape. I pull the back trigger on my single shotgun and aim at it. One shot and the squirrel's body shifted, then it came back the way it did. I ran to the left side of the tree to shoot, then the grey fell off the tree. I sat by that tree and waited. 5 minutes later, I saw something yellow jumped up a small tree. I snuck closer but the fox heard my foot step and looked at me. It switch it's body with the head facing the ground, then I said to myself " Better shoot now or never". I took the shot from 20 yrds away and the fox jumped off the tree and ran on the ground. I chase that fox like I was chasing my wife and there was no where for it to hide due to it's color not blending in with the white snow. The fox climbed up the tree and I took a shot at it from under the branch because the fox was above it. The fox jumped down and ran. I was like "Damned. Though I hit it. Guessed not". So I ran after it. I got so closed to the fox when I chased it. Like 1 foot away because the fox was injured with a broken leg and BB to his left thigh. Then I flipped the shotgun barrel open and put a new shell in it. I was changing as I was chasing the fox. I got to about a foot away from the fox and could have tackle it but instead put the shot into use and blew it's brain out. Sadly, it had to come to that point. Then I went walking around and saw the last grey on a tree top. I aimed at it and the grey kept on switching spots so after 10 minutes I shot at it and the squirrels got hurt due to the amount of BBs. The squirrels ran higher to another branch and bam! The grey fell off.
Overall I had fun shooting with a shotgun. Used a single shot and got to say, this was so fun especially when the squirrels are wild. Love to shoot when the squirrels are on the run. When they climbed up the tree is when they are done because BBs can hit anywehere withing the 5 ft perimeter when it disperse. Had a great time.
Gun use: Single shot gun 20 gauge.
Weather conditions: 7-9 Morning was about 38 F. No sun. Sprinkles of snow flakes. The snow reflects any other color besides white. Easy to see and shoot.
Time:9-12. Weather was not that great. Snow flakes became snow and the snow on the ground was become wet. Squirrels don't come out.
Squirrel size: Fat dued to late season hunting. Fox measured from foot to head is 1 foot.. The two greys are fat and are 10-11 inches.
Squirrel conditions: Wild from human hunting and deer hunting activities.
Total of squirrels saw : 5
Shot: 3
Hopefully, the entry helps some of you guys out if you guys decide to hunt.
Also as I was driving there I saw a small doe crossing infront of me. I slowed down to peek at it and thank god I didn't speed up because another small doe was in front of my car. It was 2 ft away from my bumber. If I sped up, I would of got deer meat tonight with a 800 repair bill to go with the meal.

thanks addison,
These two were taken the down here in northeast Oklahoma.... it was on our 40 acre property, have been putting out corn for them 1 month or so before taking them during the holiday gun season down here.
Both were one shot drop, they were probably dead before hitting the ground. shots were fire from a diy tree stand me and my dad made, which was about 40 yards away.
these were taken within a couple minutes of each other, both using Remington model 700 .270

Thank you thank you, believe it or not... I actually joined after watching your squirrel hunting video. :) good work!
Yeah, been in Oklahoma since 98 before the Hmong boom down here.
A few cousins and I like to hunt and fish a lot down here, plus that's about all there is to do during the summer seasons! striper and white bass are definitely fun fish down here!
Oklahoma does have a nice abundance of white tail down here, but some days you would hardly think so. most lands down here are privately owned, but there are still nice public areas here and there.

You can tell the maturity level of a buck by the height of the tree scraping?
-
You can tell the maturity level of a buck by the height of the tree scraping?
Still just a theory but think about it.
Mature bucks are usually bigger, taller, and more powerful than smaller bucks.
i.e.

Sure the width of a tree will tell you how wide the rack is, but the average height of the rub (IMO) will tell you roughly how old the buck is.

Looks like a true hunter there. Good tracking!
Ever seen this before? Its from Cali, my bro-in-law tells me these are made by woodpeckers. They peck hundreds of holes and store nuts in each hole for the winter. If you ever come across one, just sit below it and wait, sooner or later squirrels will come by looking for nuts.

Interesting... Never seen that in the midwest. Thanks for sharing Perry. O0
So do the squirrels stuff the holes with nuts or do the woodpeckers? ???

The woodpeckers stuff the holes, the squirrels just steals it. I've never seen this in the midwest.
-
That's pretty common out here. Woodpeckers store the acorns and I believe they return to eat the bugs that eat the acorns. Never seen a squirrel stealing nuts though.

Yea just a group of friends that got together for our 1st Annual Pheasant hunt on a game farm.
Turkey hunting starts on April 11th here in WI. From scouting I've already seen toms struting and hens split into smaller groups. It's almost that time of the year for the gobblers to be chasing those hens.
Can't wait! My week starts April 18-24. Decoys, calls, blinds and gear is all ready to go. Even been out teasing the toms. lol

First squirrel of the season, first squirrel with this gun. Headshot! Ended up with 3 (1 shy of limit) but I hit 2 more that got away. I need to practice headshots or vitals more. Sometimes you hit them in the body and they go down but dont die and run away into holes.

Hey that's great you got your son on them. I bet he was pretty stoked. Thanks for the advice on the shot placement, all I could find online was headshot, headshot, headshot. Meeka don't eat the head like us haha. Our spot was pretty fished out this year, my friend and his buddies cleaned house last year with shotguns. I had to go to an old reliable place to find them, squirrel soup tonight!
-
BTW lovely gun. Maybe if one day I pick up the hobby I'll look into a 10/22.
-
Roc, what caliber?
-
Sept. 15 2012. Wiconsin's small game is on. Can't wait. FYI. I hunt till the last day of small game season.
-
Roc, what caliber?
Mine is in 22 LR. I found it really likes CCI Mini-Mags Hollow Points. I tried a couple Hyper Velocity rounds (although you're not supposed to) but they seem to group all over the place. CCI Stingers jam due to the longer cases. I still want to try some Aquila SSS 60 grain subsonics, but may just stick to Mini-Mags.
-
Roc, If that Marlin likes the CCI mini-mags, you should order up a few boxes of CCI standard velocity, SK Standard Plus or Wolf Match Target (re-branded SK). These 3 are a step up from the normal bulk or 'high velocity' 22LR ammo. Velocities are around 1040-1070fps and you'll eliminate cold bore first shot fliers. They're all I shoot if out hunting...you WILL be surprised by the one hole accuracy!

-
Thanks for the ammo recommendation shooter. Do you regularly shoot round nose loads? I was always under the impression that hollowpoints were necessary. Guess I can't argue with your results though, I assume round noses are more accurate than hollowpoints correct?
Also, do you prefer lead ammo vs copper plated?
-
For hunting yes, but if out plinking any of the bulk varieties will do. Any type of bullet will do, depends on your preference and what your particular gun likes.
What matters to me is cold bore first shot. It needs to be consistent and if you can't place the bullet where you aim, then likely it will result in a miss or a gut shot quarry. All higher end semi-match and match bullets are Round noses and these bullets' velocity are in the 1040-1080fps range, slightly above or below the sound barrier, which makes them accurate. Most high velocity rounds fall around 1200fps and the hyper velocity are at 1500fps and higher.
In the end, the faster round has more energy, but if can't hit your quarry, then what's the point?
-
I'll try those standard velocities to see how the gun likes them. I know I can pick up a pack of the CCI standards here in town but the Wolf may be harder to find. Owning a rifle is so interesting, I've never been met with so much to tinker with. I've been a hunter most of my life but was never really into guns. My Marlin has changed that I think. I've put in about an hour into taking it apart and cleaning it and also tuning the trigger.
-
The best ammo for the 22LR are the CCi mini-mag High velocity... Shoot clean and not alot of duds shot... Don't buy them winchester super X. They have duds shot. Half of the super x either shoot but is weak shot... I miss my 22lr lol... Think of getting the Marlin 60 series again. The one u load into the tube... U can carry hundreds of ammo in your shack... ;D 8)
-
You should get the Marlin 60 man, that's what mine is. Look up how to replace the trigger return spring with a floppy disk spring and it'll cut you atleast half a pound of trigger pull. The other easy mod is to reshape your sear spring, that'll take off another half a pound. After that you'll have a very happy hunting trigger. It's pretty easy stuff, great gun for the money.
Like I was saying earlier my Marlin 60 really likes the mini-mags also. I would not mind testing out other ammunition though, just to see how the gun likes them.
-
One of the lightest .22 LR Semi Autos is the Marlin 795. It weighs in at only 4.5lbs! It is the same gun as the marlin 60 but has detachable magazines rather than a magazine tube. They retail for about $160. Very accurate rifles.
If you have more to spend, Ruger 10/22s are basically the staple of the .22 rifles. To me they feel like a carbine and so are easier to shoot. They average around $250. One thing I really like about the 10/22 is the inline magazine that doesn't stick out. That and also the mods are basically limitless.
In the end it basically comes down to your budget. The Marlin 795 has better out of the box accuracy but less aftermarket support. The 10/22 is a little less accurate out of the box but you have a platform for major customization for the rifle's lifetime. For me the cons of these two rifles are the triggers, I don't like how they come stock. They both need a touch of work to get them feeling good.
-
Any recommendation s for a light-weight synthetic .22 LR rifle? The wooden ones seem to be heavier.
There are a variety of manufacturers out there with fine firearms. Hard part is choosing. Roc pointed out two that are in the cheaper/affordable range. Why not buy a synthetic Ruger 10/22? The synthetic stock is polymer and is slimmer/lighter than the wood stock. Only thing I don't like is the low comb on the stocks.
I prefer and set up my rifles to be in the 6 to 6.5lbs range. A bit more weight = more stabilty shooting.
-
Lots of good reviews on the papoose. You can put a scope on it as long as you don't break it down too much. The scope rail is on the receiver so every time you take off the barrel you can potentially change zero. But then again you could just always just leave the barrel attached like a regular rifle. Accuracy is just as good as the 795 since it uses the micro-grooving technology.
-
the_shooter, I already own a Ruger 10/22 LR rifle; love it but I just want something lighter.
Hey Roc thanks for pointing me in the direction of Marlins. After digging around on the internet I found the Marlin 70 PSS Papoose... weighs only 3 lbs! Semi-auto and loads through a magazine clip. My next squirrel gun yo!

Nice gun, very affordable.
-
Don't waste your money on these exp. guns. Go get yourself some quality savage models that will beat any compettitor by a margin. Savage has the most and best rifles for your dollar. I own a .22 lf 64 model and it shoots accurate. lightweight. easy to carry and no need to worry about it getting bang up.
-
Cool to have an outdoor range like that.

U can carry hundreds of ammo in your shack... ;D 8)

They have the DIP drop in trigger now and also the MCarbo Spring Kit. Put these two in and you will have a wider trigger, no creep or play, and a break averaging around 3.5 pounds. I think the MCarbo spring kit costs like $35 and the DIP trigger costs $90.

getting the mcarbo kit. it better get here tomorrow (ordered last sunday).. i highly doubt it will top the accutrigger on my savage models though..
the 6lb pull on the 795 is so bad.. 3.5lb should be a lot better
-
Yea man, I went the cheap temporary way and replaced the trigger return spring with a floppy disk spring and bent my sear spring like in the tutorial vids. There was a huge difference, I'm sure that with the mcarbo kit you'll get even better results since you replace the hammer and disconnector spring too. Expect it to be kinda like a two stage trigger, a few millimeters of almost no resistance then break. Taking it apart is super simple and there are a bunch or assembly and disassembly vids of 795s and 60s (same gun different magazines) on youtube.

After a long weekend at camp it was a tough decision on a Monday morning, Autumn bass on the river or Rat hunt. Well my dad wanted to go hunting so we hit up one of the few properties close to home. Shot a few rats and got into this one.

.22lr O0 No need for .17hmr or .22mag or anything bigger. I would of popped it with a .177 cal if I had one. :D

No way, you took a Yote with a .22LR? Crazy skills brah.

I guess I was upwind, it was windy, it was hungry and he came into my call of lemongrass. No blind no nothing, wasn't expecting a coyote, sounded like a rat coming towards me. He caught me by surprise and I surprised him in the head. He was taken in Peirce County WI.
No way, you took a Yote with a .22LR? Crazy skills brah.
Sure did take it with a .22lr. That's a model 60 that i'm slinging. Its all about shot placement. Its too bad I don't lug around cameras like my buddies It wouldve been cool footage. After I shot him the damn thing was howling like a dog, will never forget that! O0
Nice bla! Is that a Marlin model 60 22 lr I see? If so, nice rifle and I love that rifle! A lot of people aren't aware of what it's capable of doing... I promise you all, a body shot would have killed that coyote too!
Yes that's a Model 60 with a Banner. Its been in the family for a long time so I put a scope on it last year and called it mine. She's old but trusty and accurate!
Here's one from a few weeks ago. Rat management on one of the few private accesses that I have all neck n head shots. O0

Foxes, wolves, and coyotes are all edible. But they have a strong smell that many people don't like. If you know how to cook them, you might have a good meal.
There are actually people who know how to get rid of the smell. I don't know how, and I haven't eaten any such animal. But I'd like to try some sometimes. I'm waiting for the day when I can kill one and take it to some friends here to cook for us.

I don't eat everything I kill because cars are hard to eat and somethings are just meant to be killed and not eaten. I killed it, I did the farmer a favor and the pelt is gonna look great. It was a fun kill and the pelt will have sentimental value in the future as it was taken with my dad. Let me add you might as well scrape all them bugs you kill on the front of your car and eat that too. O0

haha...Milesda dy has not even eaten a banana beetle. How would he take those cockroaches you are referring to? OK. I admit: I don't eat cockroaches, either. But I've eaten banana beetles and even bats before. Anyone more daring than that?

no picture but shot 3 bog fox squirrels, 1 fat grey, and 5 greys. no nuts in WI this year. squirrels are on the ground, but leaves make too much noise. Pretty much, stay in the right spot. Also no squirrels on trees, they like the ground.

Shot nothing, saw a baby squirrel. There are no squirrels in Wisconsin, probably due to last years shortage of nuts.

Addison, why you get so lucky? You eat your vitamins, live an honest life and pray every night don't you? lol Good job and congrats!!
Thanks bro.
Long story short on that buck. I shot it earlier in the season and made a flesh wound. Then got a second chance at it later in the season. I didn't think it was the same buck but util I went to gut it and found the scare from my shot earlier in the season. Great story to my biggest buck to date.
After shooting this amazing buck, it's been tough to talk myself into shooting something smaller. So far this year I've passed on a handful of decent bucks but just aren't of this caliber. Hoping for my luck to change with the rut around the corner and the leaves finally falling with these cold temps.
Good luck and be safe out there everyone. O0

Finally got my 2014 buck on public land. Not the biggest of them all but what a crazy morning after seeing 9 different bucks and passing on almost all of them except two. The first one didn't offer a clear shot so I watched it walk out of my life and this guy must've read the script. He walked into my shooting lane at 30 yards and I got it all on film. Full story and video coming soon. :D

Congratz Addy! Nice deer. I didn't harvest any this year. I've been busy and didn't get to go out much. Hopefully next year I'll do better. My wife harvested a fawn. Her first deer.
Sorry you didn't win that online competition. My friends and I voted for you.
