Title: All set for all kinds of fishing this spring
Post by: Reporter on February 21, 2020, 03:50:18 PM
I've changed my practice from carrying a lot of different poles to just carrying one.

But I'll take along a lot of reels with different lines, so I can switch them back and forth onto this one pole.

Crappies? Yup. Got a reel with a line for that.

Bass? Got one for that, too.

Carp? Got one for that. Same one I'll be using for cats and buffaloes, pikes and even sturgeons.

No need to carry bulky stuff.

It took me a long time to make myself buy a new pole. I've planned this all along. I will buy just one more pole. And that's it for the rest of my fishing life.

Fishing is nothing like martial arts.  It's not that you catch more just by using the same bait 10k times or that you won't catch any using one bait just for the first time.

Hmmm....I still mix and match up things, change things and then change over still.

Then dig up the old Ugly Stick and whip that around a few times.

I guess I just like how different rods works and how different reels works.

there are two types of fishermen, one who knows what they want to catch, and then...there are those who just catches anything that bites.

same thing with gears...the experience is more pleasurable having a quality pole and reel than crappie fish!

as much fish as hmgrock catches...he is never going to win a bass tournament...t hat is how one can tell the difference between a pro and a novice.

i'm no fishing expert but if I wanted to catch a sheep head...I will catch them all day (at the st. croix/mississippi river).

bro

im a bass killer man
the only reason why i don't fish for them
is because they taste like shyt

i prefer the whitebass more

I only fish for recreation only.  No pressure.  No need to catch them all.  I just like to use the equipment and if I catch a fish, it's all for fun.

Definitely not set for any spring fishing...I did get some back yard casting practice in before the snow.  Oh well...

I just bought my fishing license after this last snow cleared.

If you want, this May, come with me to a lake to catch largemouths. There are lots of them. We have to find them in some hard-to-get to spots but the bites are fun!

Thanks for the invite.  I'll just have to see when if I do get license.  I hate going to walmart...but might have to make that trip.

Cool.

I started looking for some really good baits this whole year just for them. Got a bunch of artificial things we can use. But last year I noticed that live crawlers worked better than live leeches. I just don't like touching crawlers too much.

Thanks for the invite.  I'll just have to see when if I do get license.  I hate going to walmart...but might have to make that trip.

Last week I caught a 4-pounder and released it. That was from a different lake than the one I'm going to tomorrow. There are  lot of the big ones in this new lake.

Surprising how last week we managed to still catch our limits of crappies for three persons and also caught lots of largemouths. We kept our limits of the crappies and released some with the largemouths.

6-lb low-vis-green mono line on 7' walleye pole, 1/8 oz flu flu tipped with 1/2" chartreuse Gulp minnows.

Deeper waters produce better results. Let it go down as deep as possible, even touching the bottom. Even shrubby and weedy beds on shallows don't do that well.

In most people's freezers right now.

But Hastings' dam, Red Wing by the park or a bit up New Port park, the various Mississippi dams, Lake City, even St. Croix's Hudson where the seagulls are, Prescott...

I think they do better early morning to late afternoons and early evenings.

Guys love bucktails and mimic minnows for white bass.

you don't drive 6 hours to devil's lake ND like those hmong folks on youtube?
Title: Re: All set for all kinds of fishing this spring
Post by: Reporter on July 08, 2020, 03:24:08 PM
Did one time and got my two-day limits. But I seriously don't think it's worth it. Even if I got a whole truck-load, I'm still not going to drive 6 hours each way just for some white bass. I love my car more than just getting some fun catching extra fish that I don't even eat much of.

I love fishing.  But I'm not that nuts about fishing. Now and then I'd drive one or two hours max to a good spot. But I don't go everyday. The gas, the mileage, the time lost from work--all  tell me I shouldn't be out there for too much more than one day. I always come right back home after one day of fishing.

A lot of my fishing skills come from reading what those pros are saying on Facebook, especially at Hmong Fishing Scene and Minnesota Hmong Fishing. Plus, ideas from a few friends I had gone out to fish with in the past. Otherwise, I'm not a guaranteed catcher. I don't know the right baits. I don't know the right moves for each kind of fish. I don't even know all of the great lakes and streams. I'm just beginning to acquire the right tools. But I'm still not that good and not the crazy about fishing.

I'm usually not alone. The only time I go alone is when I'm going out of the country or to my usual, annual resort getaway.

Two years ago, I took a whole family fishing. They asked me to take them two hours to my favorite spot that normally would catch a lot. We got there. They set up their camps and started cooking and drinking. I was the only one fishing all night.

That was fun. But I don't want to take people like that with me again.

The right to carry concealedly is upon us and more of that right is being exercised by many now than ever before.

It helps to pay attention to our surroundings, too, which I hadn't until now.

A few years ago, I went to fish at the dam and waterfall  at Cannon Falls on Highway 19 from Hastings. In the past, there were usually a lot of people. But that day I was alone. After slipping down the hill over a few snakes to the edge of the water, I caught one white bass and one bullhead. It also felt creepy. So, I took off.

I told my cousins about how I was so surprised no one was there. That was usually a good spot for walleys, pikes, muskies, white bass--besides drums and bullheads. They said Hmong people don't go there anymore because of a racial incident...A Hmong guy and his teenage son were fishing. The son was by the dam while the guy fished downstream. He heard his son cry "Dad!" The guy rushed back and two White guys were already holding the boy's arms and about to beat him up. The guy screamed to them and ran to them. He took out his pistol and pointed it right on one of the white guys' head and told them to leave. They did.

I don't think Hmong and White people fish there ever again.

I keep saying Hmong American girls are much better than those in Laos. But if it's about fishing, I haven't found one who is just as ok with it as I am.

True.

That's the hard part. Can't always find someone who's in love with fishing. I can't focus on just fishing or her love of fishing, of course. It has to
be someone who's in love with me.

But I'm hoping for both, since fishing has  been my life all along and will continue to be.

I did meet someone who said she'll fish with me and practice hard on fishing so she could catch something. When I told her the hard part is what to do with when she catches a big one. That's because we all can cast in but we don't know what's going to bite. "I'll just come to you when I catch a big one," she said.

That was in a dream I had a few days ago. :2funny:

I'm down to two rods: one 7' medium power, 40-lb wire with 10-lb leader, for those largemouth lunkers and one 5'9" extra fast action with varying jig and hook sizes for all others. I just carry extra reels with different lines on them to switch back and forth.

Lures? I have a whole tackle box of different kinds but most are aimed at white bass, crappies, and largemouths. I'll just buy shrimps when I want cats. I'll get a can of corns when I want carps.

Not too crazy about eyes. They are too hard to scale off.
