Title: Accounting Major
Post by: Lavender on October 26, 2011, 01:56:12 PM
So I am in the accounting major.  I have a very difficult time understand what I read in the accounting 1 textbook.  I am not good with small details information.  I also don't seem to be interested in what I read.

Does that mean accounting is not the right major for me?  By the way, I do well when actually work on projects with hands on or after a lecture.

Suggestions????

Accounting is boring and tedicious.  But if you don't understand the concepts (after some tutoring) or you don't have any interest whatsoever in what you read, then its probably a good thing to consider a different major.

Also one thing with accounting is that it requires a lot of attention to details.  So if you don't like working at the mircoscopic level, then you're not going to like being an accounting major once you get to upper division courses.

I only took like three accounting courses and it was boring and very detail.

My S/O is in accounting... and he's struggling, too.  He's more of a hands on person, so he learns better through practice rather then reading.  He's great at math and actually doing the work, but not so much in reading comprehensions .  Unfortunately, his course work involves a lot of reading.  He struggles with understanding the questions asked on exams.  I told him to read through carefully to see what the question is asking him.

The best thing to do is form a study group.  Once you teach others and learn from others it becomes easier.  Plus, you have a support network.  Befriend those who can help you.  Luckily the s/o has an accountant friend who is willing to help when the s/o is lost.

Good luck, and keep at it. :)  It's a tough field.

do you like accounting or do you think you'll have a better chance at find just a job in the future? if you like it, stick with it and do whatever it takes to succeed. if you don't care too much for it, find a new major.

Lav, I graduated w/ an acct major.  After college I went on to graduate school and am doing something else.  I am good with math and thought that it would be a good area to go into.  You should talk to pple in the accounting field and spend some time with them to see if that is something you like to do.  As with every profession, what you learn in school is quite different in the working world.  I have a SIL who finished her acct degree and is studying for the CPA.  She is a controller for a company now.

After the struggle and passed Accounting 1 with an A....I decided to move forward.  I plan to focus on my study this semester.  Will see how I do.  Many acct. teachers are running their own acct. firm.  That would be something interesting to do.  I love math...but the details is the part that I have no patience with.  And the detailed process is the part where it doesn't go into my ears  ;D

I hope to land a high paid job after graduate or work in my own business.  :)

though i thought themodynamics, fluid mechanics, organic chemistry, quantum physics, linear algebra, etc was challenging for the scientific base degrees, i found out that basic accounting was equally challenging :D

i'm fascinating about the concept of double entry in accounting, i find it to be a beautiful system of tracking :)  O0
if i would have known better, or someone who would have told me while i was in college, i would have been an accountant :)

Accounting is not all debits and credits.  There are a lot of theories and principles involved.  Also, there are standards that you have to abide by.  In the end, whatever you do, you have to try to accurately capture the status of the financial transaction.

Lav, I thought you were in the medical field?  If I can do it all over again, I would go into science or technology.

Accounting can be very rewarding.  At first it can be tedious and redundant because you're learning the fundamentals (i.e. debits and credits).  However, as you go beyond your sophomore year, you begin to learn more about theories, principles, and practical applications.

If you can tough it out, there are endless opportunities.  There is a significant demand for accounting professionals.  The goal is to land yourself an internship while you're a junior or senior with one of the Big 4 accounting Firms.  They are tough but once you get that internship and you do well, the chance of getting an offer is very high.  Once you get in with one of these big firms, there are endless opportunities in audit, tax, advisory, consulting, etc.  You work your ass off, however, you are learning so much.  Trainings being provided are top notch and at times are overkill.

Pay wise, it's not bad.  You start out between $55K - $60K and raises can range anywhere between 5% - 15%.  If you can withstand the crazy hours at times, it's a very rewarding career.  Ultimately, if you can make it to becoming a partner, you're talking starting salary between $350K - $400K.  Most partners will average between $600K - $900K per year.

Good luck and stay focused.  It is very rewarding!!!

That's insane pay 300k-600k.  How many partners do your org have?  I suppose if you charge $200 per hour that's a grip load.

We have well over a couple thousand partners.  The pay at that level is insane but it comes with a lot of risks and rewards.

PCA can organize their own firm.  They will earn a lot of money.

It's not that bad.  My brain hurts thinking about tax implications of mergers and acquisitions.  I'll trade you this for debits and credits. ;D

Ehehehe...I did our returns.  My brain was hurting for awhile until we finally completed them.  Lol....I'm getting there soon.  Will take tax and payroll next couple semesters.

Where do I sign up to make that kind of pay?  LOL...I can learn anything...Hec k, I can learn rocket science if that's the pay too.   :2funny:

There is a shortage of accounting students nationally.  This is projected to get worse.  Most states require a five year program such that when you graduate, you get your bachelor and masters at the same time.  Sign up at any accredited university:)

Tax is totally different than accounting unless you're taking tax accounting then definitely you're head will hurt.  Tax was my favorite class.  You'll learn fundamentals of taxation such as choice of entity formation (i.e. C-Corp, LLC, Partnership, and S-Corp) and will likely get to prepare some individuals, partnership, and/or corporate returns if you're lucky.

I don't know if it will be tax accounting or just general tax.  I like to learn, so I can file my own tax returns.  I don't want to pay.

So are you already done with school?  Seems like you know a lot.

Taxes... :'( :'( :'( :'(  I don't have time for go back to school for taxes.  I see what you do now...  Never mind...taxes make that kind of pay eh...  I suppose if I left my comfy job and started a consulting company for what I do, I can bill similar rates but connection is everything.

Anything is possible O0  You are right about connections.  It is all about it but that's the same in pretty much any industry.

Unfortunately, I don't know how to use Quickbooks.  I specialize in tax so don't deal much with debits and credits these days.  Hopefully, you're learning a lot about LLC and partnerships.  I'd be curious as to what they are teaching in regards to LLC and partnerships.

I have a lot of questions on my returns.  I don't know why my employee doesn't have Fed. or State income tax witholding.  Also....I'm a bit confuse with the 940 and 941 forms.....As employers, we pay half of the FICA and SUTA (spl) taxes....how does that work?  I mean just pay whatever shows up in the 940 and 941 forms or are there extra payment?  Which means...is what shows up in the forms mainly combining the employee and employer portion or just the employee portion or just employer portion?

Are you in MN?  I need free consultation.  :-[

Sorry, I'm not in MN.  Employment taxes can be tricky and is not my cup of tea.  You're employee typically should have fed and state w/h unless they're exempt or claimed on the W-4 that no w/h was necessary.  FICA is for social security and medicare and SUTA is for state unemployment.  In general, you pay one half of FICA and the employee pays the other half.  That's just the law.  There are some exemptions from this but those are typically rare.

My advice is don't screw around with employment tax as the government can come down pretty hard.  If you have a CPA currently doing your return, I would recommend talking to that person as he/she would know your situation better.

there are pros and cons to tax and accounting...I t's a learning process because every year, policies and rules change.  You need to keep updated with the IRS regulations.

Form 941 and 940 are employer federal quaterly tax to report their wages, tips, etc. There are so many taxes that one need to focus on such as unemployment taxes (quaterly), sales tax and withholding tax, coporate tax..etc. It is a headache if you have no patience.

I use Quickbooks Pro2012, it is okay.  If its a small business, no need for a CPA but for bigger companies, you will need a CPA.

I absolutely hate accounting.  I hate having to mull over every detail and if you are off by a penny, GOD HELP ME!  And the GAAP Standards, that scares me!

My sister majored in accounting, but never actually did any accounting work; similar but not.

I was going to follow her footsteps, but when I got into the Accounting major classes, forget that.  Even tutoring couldn't help me stay and learn.  I switched major's fast...to HR to get away from numbers.  Whew!  But then I have to calculate people's pay.  Urgh!  The least part I like about my job.  I'd rather paper-screen 1000's of people, so much easier.  Accounting has dramatize me with numbers forever.  :cussing:
