Post by: darkhelmet on May 11, 2017, 10:16:27 AM

I don't have an opinion on SNAP but I'll tell you what I know about past industry game changers, and you can arrive to your own personal conclusion because investment is a very personal reason.

One way to examine a company's future outlook is to examine what other companies in that industry thinks, what they did, and how the industry is performing.  In the early 90's during the rise of Tex-Mexican, a food chain company called Chipotle received a majority investment from McDonald.  In the early 2000's, during the rise of social media, a social media company called, facebook received a significant investment of $250M from Microsoft.  Do you notice the trend?  Essentially, the investment is called a hedge.  If I think a company is going to ruin my company, I'm going to invest in that company so if I lose money, and they make money, I'll come out equal.  The shareholders does not lose and you don't get the flack from shareholder about losing money because when a Microsoft shareholder loses money on MSFT, they make money on FB, and so they OK, and business can continue going.  In fact, under market expansion assumption, the shareholders makes a bit more money because social media is a new market expansion of new consumer and industry not tapped by MSFT like media.

Note, my comment is only about emerging technology and not old industry.  Old industry do not apply the same reasoning because the entire industry could be stagnant like semiconductors

Makes total sense, that's why I decided to take position in SNAP.

Up to $20+ already.

That could be true, so I'm getting ready to unload when the lock expires on July 31st.

But for now, I'm up $2.70+

I got out this morning when Instagram announced they added face filters (copied Snap).

Made a nice $3000.  Not bad.  Will look for position when the lock expires or when the next quarter earnings are released.

I'm not familiar with those companies but good luck with them.

I used to ride the penny stocks (under $5) but dang, they too volatile for me.
Now I just pick the bigger guys.  I have positions in these right now:
GOOGL in @$528
AMZN in @$842
TSLA in @$259
AAPL in @$128

I did not ride AMD and NVDA because I put all my funds in SNAP.  I think they all gapped down at the same time.
Now I'm looking at WMT and TGT to see how they do after ER tomorrow.

Yeah penny stocks you pretty much have to your finger on the trigger and know the sector you are playing.  Large caps don't have those swings except maybe ER and some great/horrible news.

Pennies are like gambling and I do play those when I'm able to focus and watch.

OTC sub-pennies I play as lottery but at a $100 a pop.. I only need one to pop to cover 10 I'm in.

Do you play any options? I play SPY all the time to scalp. It's been flat lately but with the uncertainty lately might be more profitable.

Just looked at TGT, good looking chart. Good quarter numbers and turnaround. A few more dollars up it and could get into that gap fill territory to $66. WMT could ride TGT numbers for a bit but not sure there is much growth left there.

I've been saving and have enough to day trade but I'm not ready yet.  I should probably take a course.
Been mostly playing the large caps and vanguard funds.

Looking at DKS and TGT for now.

I don't recommend day trading until you have enough experience doing so.   Paper trade for a couple months until you can consistently win.  There is no secret. You have to win 51% of the time, and manage your losses to a minimum.

What broker do you use?

I use a few broker, robinhood, capitol one, scott trade and vanguard.
Yeah been reading about the 51% win and 1% stop loss, etc...
