So what do you think? Should cursive writing still be taught in school? Is it even useful today? Do you fill out your applications in cursive? Why learn it when it is not all that useful?

Yes, I think cursive should still be taught in school; however, we should devote less time teaching it, like maybe a week or so, because although it's a writing skill, through all my years all I found cursive to be useful for was my signature and, once in a blue moon, personal letters/cards.
I think with less time on teaching cursive, the schools may then focus more on other subjects like English, Math, Science, etc.

People tell me I have good penmanship and I do have good penmanship. No, you fill out your applications in print but you do sign your autograph or your John Handcock at the bottom in cursive right ::) So yes, children should still be taught cursive in language arts and writing. Bad handwriting belongs to those who type and work in front of their computer all day long. :idiot2:

Yes, cursive should still be taught. Penmanship is still important in the age of technology. I enjoy writing in cursive. I write my notes in cursive and even scribble my work files in cursive, too. I also love writing my name in cursive. :D

Hmm... Now that you mention it, I haven't seen little kids these days learn it.
I remember back in grade school we still have to learn. I think it's important to learn... Learning never hurts. :D

I've met girls who can not write in CURSIVE! Their hand writing look worse than mine.
I think it depends if they're a left or a right brained person. Or if they enforce cursive and regular manual writing upon themselves. Right brained people tend to love the subjects of arts, writing, and music. Most guys do have chicken scratches as handwriting. ;D

Maybe cursive should be taught in art class instead of their regular class because in the end, not everyone will need it.
btw, husband has the ugliest handwriting on earth. I can't tell the difference between his printed writing and cursive writing. They look exactly the same. And, he writes soooooo SO small I can't read it! LOL!! I get nervous when he's the one taking people's names, phone numbers (when we don't have our cell phone handy), or writing down important info.
I guess that's why he gets down hard on our 9-year-old when she writes small (she thinks it cool and fun). He probably realizes his deficiency. Okay, I'm being mean about my sweetie but it makes me laugh, in a good way.
