Wildfires rage in Sequoia National park and forest, sending flames into grove of giant trees

A pair of lightning-sparked fires that took hold in rugged terrain in the Sequoia and Kings Canyon national parks exploded over the weekend, while another blaze to the south burned into a grove of giant sequoia trees, sending smoke billowing above popular tourist destinations and forcing closures in the area.

The national parks also contain groves of giant sequoias, including the 275-foot tall General Sherman tree, considered the largest tree in the world by volume

A bit crowded pre-covid but much better compared to Yosemite. A simple hike to the General and back and don’t forget Moro Rock. With a short ascent, you get to fantastic views.

The trick for me in terms of avoiding crowd is I go on a non-holiday weekday (M-TH) but sometimes there are still a little bit of crowd. I concur regarding Moro Rock.  O0

Giant Forest trees prepped for flames in Sequoia National Park as KNP Complex fire closes in
Certain notable giants, including the General Sherman, "are being prepped the same way that we would prep structures," Paterson said, a process that entails clearing vegetation around the trees and even using a burn wrap made with aluminum around their bases. The flexible wrap is "like tinfoil basically," said Mark Garrett, a spokesperson for the KNP Complex fire, and is intended to shield the stately trees from raining embers as well as reflect radiant heat. It's the same material used to wrap fire-threatened homes and that firefighters carry on their backs in case there's a burn-over, he said. A number of historic structures in the immediate area are being similarly prepared, fire officials said.

When the smoke cleared, I want to make it out to see the General again before an unlucky year and gone forever. CZU lighting complex fires tore through one of my favorite parks. I haven’t made it out there yet since but I’m thinking all those giant redwoods are gone forever if the 97% destruction news of it is true. Big Basin is so close by too.

If it's caused by Mother Nature i.e., lightning, it's out of our control but when it's caused by humans i.e., flicking a cigarette butt out of a moving vehicle, that is the worst..

So yes, enjoy while it's still standing... O0

The General and his guards may be safe but looks like many foot soldiers died?  ???:

KNP Complex fire may have burned hundreds of giant sequoias to death: Officials. Hundreds of giant sequoias may have been killed after high-intensity flames from the KNP Complex fire tore through several groves of the massive trees in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks.
