‘Wow, you’re a white guy.’ Lyft driver boots couple over racist remarks, PA video shows

A Lyft driver in Pennsylvania said he refused to drive a “racist” bar-owner and her boyfriend — and now a video showing the interaction has amassed millions of views. James Bode, a ride-share driver for Lyft, had just arrived to pick up a woman named “Jackie” on the evening of May 13 when something she said made him do a double take. “Wow, you’re like a white guy,” the woman can be heard saying in the dashcam video timestamped at 10:27 p.m..

“Excuse me,” Bode asked. “You’re like, a normal guy?” she replied as she got settled into the back of the car. “You speak English?”

Bode looked incredulous. “Sorry,” she laughed, patting Bode on the shoulder. “No, you can get out of the car,” Bode told her. This interaction and what followed has sparked thousands of comments and over 9 million views as of May 16 after being reposted to Twitter. According to Bode, the interaction happened outside of Fossil’s Last Stand in Catasauqua. When asked if the woman and her companion, who attempted to join the ride after Bode ordered them out of the car, are owners of the bar, the woman nodded her head yes, Bode said in his post.

McClatchy News reached out to Fossil’s Last Stand for comment and did not receive a response. Police confirmed to McClatchy News that the woman pictured in the video owns the bar. The companion in the video is her boyfriend, Leigh Valley Live reported. “That’s completely inappropriate,” Bode said to the woman, who appeared to be in disbelief. “If someone was not white sitting in this seat, what would be the difference,” he asked her. When Bode relayed the woman’s greeting to her boyfriend, he began to get angry, and threatened Bode.

As the man began to yell at Bode, the Lyft driver reminded them that the interaction was all being recorded. “You’re going to threaten me? It’s because you guys are racist -----,” Bode replied as the two began to exit the vehicle. The woman’s boyfriend then used several expletives before he called the driver a “(racial slur) lover” and slammed the door. Bode told the pair he was calling the police. “You guys own the place?” Bode asked. “That’s great, everyone’s going to know. Fossil’s Last Stand for Black people, right?”

Catasauqua police confirmed to McClatchy News that a harassment report was filed that evening by the ride-share driver, with the incident under investigation. “If you make me feel uncomfortable, I will absolutely do the same, especially in my car or property,” Bode wrote on Facebook. Lyft posted a statement regarding the viral video on May 15. “We are incredibly grateful to Lyft driver @Jameswb333 for instantly shutting down this hate & upholding our no tolerance anti-discrimination policies,” the company wrote on Twitter. “We’re looking into these riders & are in touch with James to show our thanks.” Since the video’s posting, Fossil’s Last Stand has been inundated with negative reviews by Yelp posters. The platform removed the ability to post reviews due to “increased public attention.”

“While racism has no place on Yelp and we unequivocally reject racism or discrimination in any form, all reviews on Yelp must reflect an actual first-hand consumer experience,” Yelp said in a statement on the bar’s page. After receiving an onslaught of messages regarding the video, Bode posted thanking his supporters. “For everyone reaching out and showing support, thank you. I appreciate it, truly. But this is the way it should be everywhere, every time,” he wrote. “I shouldn’t be ‘the guy’ who did it or said it…we should all be that person.” Catasauqua is a suburb of Allentown.

California man charged for driving through Stop Asian Hate rally, yelling racial slurs
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Egwh_CKi6vI

A man who drove through a Stop Asian Hate rally and yelled anti-Asian slurs in Diamond Bar, California, more than a year ago was arrested on federal charges on Thursday.

Steve Lee Dominguez, 56, is facing two counts of bias-motivated interference with federal protected activities. He reportedly ran a red light on March 21, 2021, to block protesters and scream racial slurs at them.

A video of the incident, which occurred at the intersection of South Diamond Bar Boulevard and Grand Avenue, shows a black Honda Civic driving through about a dozen people who carried signs with messages such as “Stop Asian Hate” and “End the Violence Against Asians.” After making a U-turn, the driver can be heard screaming “F*ck China!” before taking off.

A now-unavailable video showed the driver pulling over after being followed by at least one protester, who recorded his license plate. He could be heard yelling “F*ck China!” once again before screaming “F*ck you!” at the protestor.

Chinese brothers use hand cart to pull their sick mother from the hospital 22 miles to their home

Two Chinese brothers showcased their unconditional love for their mother by traveling 36 kilometers (22.37 miles) with a hand-pull cart to bring her home from the hospital.

Xu Guizhi, 86, was recently discharged from the hospital after undergoing surgery for an unknown illness in April. Since she suffers from severe motion sickness, her sons Liu Bo and Liu Guang needed to think of the best way to transport her to their home in Shandong Province, China, reported South China Morning Post.

“My mother will vomit after less than 30 minutes in a car or even an electric tricycle,” Guang told the Morning Post. “She can only ride a rickshaw without feeling sick, but it does not have enough room for her to lie down.”

The elder brother also noted that their mother vomited blood when they brought her to the hospital. He and Bo decided to use a hand-pull cart to bring their mother home, but they told Chinese media that they could not find a suitable cart from their local steel market.

Guang considered buying wheels to make a cart, but the brothers eventually found the perfect one in their uncle’s yard. They padded the steel cart's surface with sponge so their mother would not slip. They also added a rain cloth and a curtain to protect her from precipitation and sunlight.

The trip was initially expected to last for 10 hours, but thanks to the help of family members and friends, the brothers’ journey lasted just over seven hours.

“We divided people into pairs, and each pair pulled two to three kilometers at a time,” Guang said.

During their trip, the elder brother would ask their mother if she was feeling fine, and she would often reply by urging them to take a break.

“It’s the right thing to do to look after our parents when they’re old because that is how they raised us,” Guang was quoted as saying.

“I love that they still respond when I call ‘mum’ or ‘dad.’ I can still wash my mother’s feet and my father’s head when they need me,” he added. “Something as simple as sitting next to them makes me happy.”

Megan Fox ‘cut’ hole in crotch of jumpsuit to have sex with Machine Gun Kelly

Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly’s sex drive might just be the strongest force in the universe.

The couple won’t let anything get in the way of them hooking up — not even designer duds, as the actress revealed.

Sharing a slideshow of images from the 2022 Billboard Music Awards on Sunday night, Fox, 36, included a screenshot of a text conversation with her stylist, Maeve Reilly.

“Was this blue outfit expensive because we just cut a hole in the crotch so we could have sex,” she told Reilly, referencing the plunging embellished catsuit she modeled earlier that day.

Orange County Church Shooting Called Chinese vs. Taiwanese Hate Crime

The man who allegedly killed a doctor and injured five others at a Taiwanese church in Orange County was a U.S. citizen born in China who hated Taiwan and drove from Las Vegas armed with guns, chains and numerous Molotov cocktails, authorities said on Monday.

David Chou, 68, allegedly chained shut the doors where up to 40 people were attending a luncheon in honor of a former pastor of the Irvine Taiwanese Presbyterian Church and began firing at congregants, Orange County Sheriff Don Barnes said Monday.

Barnes said the violent assault Sunday afternoon at the Geneva Presbyterian Church in the retirement community of Laguna Woods was motivated by Chou’s hatred of Taiwan

General Discussion / Another first for Hmong in professional sports

Columbus Crew 2 Midfielder among first professional soccer players of Hmong descent in U.S.
Michael Vang grew up in St. Paul, Minnesota. He was surrounded by a family who loved soccer, one likely influenced by his father.

Now there is another "first" for the Hmong people in Columbus.

Michael Vang is a midfielder with the Columbus Crew 2 and is among the first Hmong professional players in the U.S.

“It brings just so many people from different places together and I’m just grateful to be here,” said Vang about his recent start on the professional soccer team.

Vang grew up in Saint Paul, Minnesota.  He was surrounded by a family who loved soccer, one likely influenced by his father.   His dad coached club level in France before emigrating to the U.S.  After finding the love for the sport in his kids, he started soccer clubs and leagues in the small Minnesota suburb.

“They told me that it’s a big step and to always give 100% and not 50 because everyone is watching you,” said Vang about his parents. “All eyes are on you and you want to set a good example and show them the reason why you’re there.”

In 2020, Vang arrived into the world of professional soccer players. He started his career as a Forward at Madison FC from 2020 to 2021.

His brother Brian, also step up to the professional world in 2020. The two became some of the first Hmong players on the soccer field in the U.S.

Last month, Ohio state senator Tina Maharath tweeted this photo - saying "it was great taking my son to the first Crew 2 game where he saw his first Hmong player ever.”

In 2018 she too broke barriers, becoming the first Asian American woman elected to the Ohio Senate.  And just like her, Michael says representation does matter.
