Asset can be many things
For example your cars can be worth $5k
Whole life insurance with cash value could be an asset
My house is value at $120,000ish last I checked
I got it for cheap during the crash
And yes "Asset" like home values and/or having "$100k in savings" does count towards eligibility determination when applying for "food stamps"...Yeah, I know frauds still have no problems stealing from the poor's resources due to lack of shame..
