Cool.
Thanks for the news, hmgRock! That's good news! I'm re-checking my nets and waders to make sure they are ready. The truck is!
Some Cambodian friends of mine have been waiting for me to give them signal to go or not. I have been checking smelting activities and temperatures up there. Last year, I nailed it on the head. We got there the night I said we should go, and they filled 5, 5-gallon buckets.
They think I'm the expert. So, they are relying on me again.
-
No. 8 won't work.

I don’t see you ever mentioned this
But the wind is also a big factor
I like calm wind with a slight breeze from the north
So the wind hitting my face
The wind will also help push the fish toward the shore
-
And the water temperature too
-
No. 8 won't work.
I don’t stress on work
You can always make money
If they fire me
They fire me
Don’t matter
Plus i make more money just clicking a few button on
On my phone, trading stock

Too far onto shores that some end up on the dry sands and rocks. The seagulls of them the following morning.
I know how they take the water temperatures there. My friends don't want to learn that. They want me to do all the work for them until netting. They love netting.

That's a nice one. I didn't know that. Thanks.

I have a video from one year ago today that shows me going up north to check on the run. There was no run yet at that time. So, I'm not going up today yet.

you should check out lake link
https://www.lake-link.com/minnesota-fishing-reports/ (https://www.lake-link.com/minnesota-fishing-reports/)
it's pretty active, depending on the lake and pond etc..
you can get some good info and report
along with the live webcam and weather
and just the seasoning
you can get the timing down
i probably give it another 1-2 week till i go
depending on the weather
-
I have the Lester River temperature nailed down. But that's a nice link for other lakes.
Yes, another 1 to 2 weeks sounds right. It's still 43 only now. Been like that for the last week and a half.

bro...too damn far...used to smelt just a couple miles where I live. Know any other places beside Duluth?
-
Park Point is two miles or so less.
Then Green Bay, Lake Michigan both near Lansing and Chicago.
Well, you could try the Iowa River, which is just a tiny branch of the river.
Damn, where do you live? Can't be pointing to places without knowing how far they'll be from you.

and still catch tons of smelt
WISCONSIN POINT
I circle it for you on the map
along that beach
you can camp there during smelth season for free
bring lots of beer and brats

Ashland in not far from Park Point. Same kind of thing: beach and smelts. You can do all your three Bs there: bonfires, beer, and brats.

He is going to have to drive to Duluth and cross over. Once at that turn, how far up is Lester River? Not so far. Just a few miles.

Once the smelts start to run, that license is nothing compared to the excitement he's going through.
So, I bought a very expensive seine and didn't have anyone else on the other end, so I posted it up to sell. $200.00, I posted it up on Craigslist. Several guys were competing for it. One guy called me and insisted that I lower it to $150.00. I said "no." Another guy was sending out his check, he said. But there was a third who told his wife to come get it and she didn't. He took off work to come within the hour. "Someone else would have taken it in an hour or so," he told me. I agreed. I told him people were lining up for it. He said $200.00 was a great deal. I had used it only once. I spread it out on my lawn for him to look. "It's so new!" he said. $200.00 he happily paid.
Then just one day before people started saying the smelts have started to run, the guy who wanted $150.00 for it texted me and said he was going to come get it now.
I texted back that another guy already took it for $200.00.
I originally bought it for $370.00 and it it customized and treated with a loop net in the middle, too.
You think $51.00 will stop Mind_Teaser? Or $54.00 for him and a girl for 14 days of netting?
Nawh. I don't think so.

I used to have 4. Now, down to two and he isn't that brave.
So, I'm relying on my Cambodian friends--5 of them, two that are women and one that's a little boy.
Maybe they can join the team long term. We'll see.
But they aren't into seining yet. Maybe one day.
I don't like the unstable sands though. Keep dragging my feet down.
My Cambodian friends don't drink. I don't, either. We're cool together but we don't care about bonfires and beaches. Just the smelts, that's all we care for.

Reporter/HmongRock
Thanks for the info. But seem like I'd have to spend close to $500 just to get set up for smelting. How about I just buy the smelt from you guys? What do you say? I'm serious.
-
Sure. $70.00-$80.00 a 5-gallon bucket.

To be fair, I have to charge everyone the same across the board.

If they meet up with me in Duluth, I can make it $50.00-$60.00 a bucket for them. But if I have to bring those smelts down to St. Paul or Hudson, it's reasonable to charge for that transportation effort. $70.00-$80.00 it is down here.

Mind_Teaser doesn't want to pay higher to get up there. That's why he'd rather wait and pay lower for them down here.
