Title: The New Hmong of Minnesota
Post by: DuMa on July 16, 2022, 05:10:08 PM
I ran into them for the very first time when I was last in MN.  I knew right then and there that I had to do a background check to their kind of people.

You hmong do not talk too much about them and I don't understand why.  I mean I have been on PH for years now and I felt cheated that you Midwest hmongs are hiding info from me.   :2funny:  I mean there are about 10K of them in the Saint Paul area alone.  80% of them have PTSD due to the war.  My youngest MN cousin is their social worker so he gets all of their cases.  Who are they?

Karen in Minnesota
Karen (pronounced k’REN) people are an ethnic minority from the nation of Burma (also known as Myanmar). Karen refugees, who fled oppression from the Burmese government, began arriving in Minnesota in the early 2000s, with large numbers arriving starting in 2005. Today more than 10,000 people of Karen descent live in Minnesota. St. Paul is home to the largest Karen community in the U.S. The Burmese American population is:

Relatively young, with 64 percent under the age of 40
Largely first-generation American; 78 percent of Burmese-Americans are foreign born

In their native home in the Karen State in Burma, the Karen are largely subsistence farmers who work small plots to raise vegetables and rice.

Karens are some of the best hunters and anglers around. They love the outdoors more than the
Hmong do.

There are Karen, Chin, Burmese and so many other Southeast Asian Ethnic groups in America.

Where I live (no Hmong), there are quite a bit of Karens, Chins, Burmese, Akha, Lisu, etc. etc. majority of them from Myanmar.
