Title: Fishing Reports
Post by: VillainousHero on April 14, 2022, 09:03:11 AM
Went down to the St. Croix today.  It's windy, snowing and cloudy.  Temps was freezing with the wind too about 28F degrees.

Well the water level is up and a lot of floating debris from the flooded shoreline.  Of course all the trees and downed timber made it impossible to cast worth anything.  All the  floating debris also meant that every cast you're hooked over something floating.  Mostly dead shoreline grass and other dead vegetation.  So nothing biting.

This is not yet open-water fishing time. Nor is it still ice-fishing time. It's just the time to
switch between the two occasions: putting winter stuff away and getting spring stuff ready.

I haven't gone out to fish yet.

Went down to the Croix, but water level is still high.  It probably dropped by a few inches, but with the rain and even more rain on the way, the water level won't be dropping anytime soon.  That's gonna make fishing a bit difficult.  But that's gonna mean that it will be a good spawning year for the fish.

The goal is to introduce my family over there to white bass.  They are locals there and they do not know what a white bass is.  I can not believe this.  It is like living there and not knowing what the hmong do for fun.

Once they are on them white bass, they'll be on the same page as you hmongs as they will hunt them on an annually.  In this way, I'll have them as my fishing tour guide.

It doesn't take much to fish for them.  We got youtube and just follow the hmong fishermen.  They are the best minorities that catches fish over there.

I finally went and wasted time fishing.  Yeah wasn't even sure where to go so went to visit a few old places.  Surprised that there was no one fishing, well did see like two people fishing, but there's really no one.  So that figures it, no fish was biting.

Still I just stuck with it.  Finally got a bite and it took off, the drag was zipping too fast and boing my line broke.  Lost a lure there too, an inline spinner.

So I guess, switch up lures.  Back to the good old Kastmaster spoon.  And there I have it, the fish were biting.  Caught some bullheads, crappies, and white bass.  A largemouth bass too and some pumpkinseeds.  And the worst part was snagfuing up some carp.  Always big ones that wastes my time fighting them with undersized gear.

I should, but somehow I never got into the taking pictures for proof thingy down.  Everywhere I go or do, I just never or hardly ever get pictures.  Too busy at the moment to be trying to take pictures.

Bullheads makes for good bait.  Smallest bullheads makes best baits less than 5 inches, cuz they're too weak to swim away with 1 oz. sinkers.

With how water exchange for bait, I need to buy some large water jugs.  Then again, I rarely use live bait.

Wish MN would allow us to use carp for bait.

Sheepshead meat is better than sucker fish meat.  However catfish prefer sucker fish meat over Sheepshead meat.

Bullhead meat is better than Sheepshead meat.

Went down to the St. Croix and water is still high, I can't get to my shore spot to fish, unless I actually wade, but not going to, knowing how I've seen an alligator gar before, huge one with a head bigger than mine.  The slow murky water, may mean they can easily sneak up on you within feet and you won't even see them.

So went down to the public water works spot...except there's no more water works and it's some townhomes now.  So got to do some pike fishing or rather anything.  The area is overgrown with cat tails now, sort of remind of when I was a little kid and it was overgrown with lots of cat tails.  I don't know what's going on, cuz they did just dredge the area a few years ago and then they got rid of all the carps.  So now the vegetation quickly overgrows.  I caught over a dozen pikes.  So not so productive, but not skunked.

Went to Cold Springs for the night catfishing.  Water is up, but at a good level for fishing.  Since I went there at night, I couldn't really gauge the water flow and currents.  There was good night wind, so no mosquitos to deal with.
