You know those CMS churches that collect 10% of your monthly earnings for memberships?
One Hmong guy joined them and prayed to God that if God helped him win the
lottery, he would donate 10% to the churches.
Then he won 100K on the lottery and left the churches instead.
I don't know of any Hmong churches (no matter the denomination) that required 10% of your earning to be a member (tithing). All the C&MA churches that I've attended do not require tithing but generous giving.
The Old Testament practice of giving a tenth of agricultural produce and livestock to support the Levites and priests, provide for the needy, and sustain the temple. It was a moral obligation for the nation of Israel under the Law of Moses, a reminder that all their possessions were from God and a show of thankfulness for His provision.
In the New Testament, the principles of freewill giving are highlighted. Emphasizing the principle of generous, cheerful, and proportional giving motivated by love for Christ, rather than the strict tithe of the Old Covenant. Believers are encouraged to give as they have decided in their heart, not under compulsion, but as a cheerful and generous act.
Think of it this way:
How is the church (building) maintain?
Who pays for the utilities and upkeep?
Who pay for the Paster/Priest salary or those that are employed by the church (custodian)?
People complained why the church need tithing... it's because of all these costs. The church do not get any funding from the gov't. And if every members tithe, these churches would be financially great. However, only 40-50% of the members ever tithe and some don't tithe 10% - I bet only 10-15% of the members ever tithe 10% or more. I know some that tithe up to 15%.
