sometimes I stay up at night and think of nothing

Atop the World

There once was a girl who stood in the midst of swaying jasmine rice
In the middle of a perfect breeze
She was so little but all her senses were at their peeks
This little girl stood there in the middle of the rice field feeling high off of bliss
She thought How beautiful is this, I surely am in heaven
Never to utter those words again

There once was a girl who enjoyed the smell of dry hay
She liked to close her eyes as she hugged and inhaled dry grass
Darkness never dared touch her; time stood still
Never was there an hourglass
She was as happy as a girl could be
Being there with her family

The rolling hills of rice and corn were pleasing to her eyes
She heard her mother say Watch your step darling I don't want to have to hu plig
To have to bring a chicken and an egg all this way to call your soul
So please be a good girl and watch your feet
This here corn is ready to pick, so please bring your kawm and help mommy

Well life took its turn and ran its course
This little girl flew from atop the world to some place new
She lost all her happiness, and bliss never again said How do you do
All she had left was a silhouette hue
Of a girl she once knew

Nicely written. Reading this one took me back to our rice filed. When I was just a little boy with so many responsibiliti es. I love running around that rice fields chasing away the insects and birds. Tending to my fruits, sugar canes, and jicamas. The sound of the distant creek, the wind, and the mothers clearing the field for new crops.
