I've been Debating on rooting my phone and been doing alot of research and would like some personally opinion from peeps.
if you have rooted your Phone please describe your personal experience. was it worth, for WIFI tethering, Apps2Sd, flashing rom etc... May be the time you took to research and if you brick you phone and had to get a new one.
-
tethering is great since it allows you to work anywhere. Apps2SD is even greater; allows me to install hella hella apps.
Rooted:
Moto Droid
oc @ 1.25ghz
running blackdroid rom 1.0 or 10.0
Rooted:
Moto DroidX
running stock with apex rom
you won't regret it.
-
Do it. You know you want to root.

Root is a must...well at least for me. it's always a plus to have full control.

I've been looking at this method. seems this would have to be the way to go.

it's funny how people who ask the most questions are the ones who don't bother reading lol.

Samsung Galaxy S
running stock on AT&T
any questions ask and most geek would help hunnaydew out for free if she live in their town just to verify the avatar with the real person for the rest of us.
-
outsidethebox ... can you verify that? If so have you seen her in real life?
-
Yes, I rooted her phone.
lol .. alright got it.
Okay can I apply different ROM and delete some/ keep some? Say if one of them has a feature I want, but I don't want all. Or install multiple and they won't over ride one another?
Each rom is package with different apps so you cannot delete some and keep some. You can only use/install 1 rom per device and then you choose to keep and add whatever you want (apps, games etc). My advice is to try them all and see what you like and don't like. Keep the one you like.
Rooted:
Droid 1
OC to 800Ghz running ultimate droid 1.0 on some other network (not verizon)
Rooted:
HTC Eris
OC to 760 running Kaos Froyo rom V38 on Verizon

if I were you I would just see what's out there besides outsidethebox rom. Some of the other roms might be better than his rom.
-
droid owners...i noticed battery life or should i say dranage is reduced by almost half since rooting, and going to froyo...double ing battery life. :o do you get similiar results too?
-
Yeah, I hardly ever have to charge it everytime I sit in class now.
was this since you upgraded to froyo?
-
cool. so it's not just me. :P
-
idk.. you lost me there but i recommend you installing ROM manager if you are rooted. from there you can backup of flash a new ROM (os) to you phone on the fly.
-
ROM Manager will back up too.
-
its gotten alot easier now. ROM Manager did away with alot of the manual steps required.
-
WHOA didn't think i would get this type of response. was just looking to see the Experience of peeps who has rooted and if they enjoyed it and what they donw. nice to know the rest of the info though.

What is your device?
From the looks of that method, all it does is root the phone in a temporary fashion only. So you will also need to nand unlock it and flash a custom recovery to make it persistent over reboots.
Yeah, i'm aware it's only temporary. i've been researching into it. I got an Intercept from VM. this is what I am Currently looking at. only thing is.... i don't know if i Want Squealjoy 2.2. http://www.joshsamuelson.com/?p=264
Still looking around and researching.
-
I'm obsessed. :D
LOL! it's Okay... Only Reason i'm thinking about doing it is to get WIFI tethering, apps2sd and get rid of some the Factory apps.
-
Titanium Backup can delete factory installed apps. A must have for rooted phones!
-
time to root phone

You don't need apps2sd unless you're still on 2.1, or you can root your phone and install a 2.2 rom. 2.2 has that built in natively. I go to http://androidforums.com/ for all my android needs. Great site O0

Still at 2.1. they Say the updates for 2.2 is Coming for Sprint version but they haven't seen it yet so if it comes for srpint then it should come for mine too soo. I've been to that forums and i also check out SDX and XDA sites also.

even with 2.2 app2sd is still app dependant. try this...
get terminal emulator and enter...
su (enter)
pm setInstallLoca tion 2 (enter) (case sensitive)...exit.
now you may move most app to SD. just don't go crazy.some system app may not work.

Do you have to have the root user privileges to do this?

yeah.

So finally got the phone rooted with a new rom. Only thing is my SD card doesn't stay mounted so i can back up the SD card and repartition for APS2SD.
-
Why is that?
Not sure why yet. Could be the new rom or because I have been using other charger to charge my phone or my computer. Gonna play with it some more.
-
It says sd card unmounted huh?
No.. What happens is, When i mount SD card and start transferring files over to pc, , it work for a minute or so then it goes into the state of preparing to unmount sd card and then my pc no longers recognize my phone as usb device. i tried restarted phone and pc.. no changes. tried mounted sd card in recovery mode and won't mount. I did how ever Find a way to back it up with mounting the SD card to PC. using Android Manager Wifi or something like that.
-
Ohoo... weird. Perhaps it's your usb...
Have no idea put i had to repartition my SD card for Apps2SD and now it seems to be working. For how long who knows...

I went from Fresh to Cyanogenmod 6.1.1 on my EVO today. I'm very satisfied with it. 4G isn't available where I'm at, but it's been fixed, and I hear that they are really close to getting the HDMI out released! I can't wait to put on my emulators on the big screen!
By the way, I got a Wii remote today, just to use on my emulators. Also got the classic SNES gamepad, that's on sale for the Wii system. It totally works!
How cool is it, to bring your phone over to a friends house, and whip out the old NES, SNES games.
-
anyone try any of the new Gingerbread builds yet?
-
hunnaydew...i know this is off topic but is your friend in your avatar single?
