How many bibles do you own and which one do you like best?
I am looking for a new bible and just want some ideas. I have one in mind already but would like to know what's popular out there.
-
Is there such a thing as a Hmong bible? I think I remember my parents had one. I'll have to ask them.
...depressing story.

... kekeke ... :2funny:
Arguably one of the best/fav Ha'Bible is the "ha'Sesame ha'Street" version/iteration (Big Bird as ha'Jesus, Oscar as ha'Lucifer, and Ernie and Bert as ha'disciples etc.) ... KEKEKE ... >:D
No! I ha'don't ha'own a Ha'Bible amicably. Have no need for all of its ha'hypocrisy ... kekeke ... ::)
Yes! I am ha'quite ha'familiar with all of the popular Ha'Bible stories/lore/verses having gone to Ha'Bible (Old and New Testatment of the Baptist sect/cult/denomination) school during my youth ... KEKEKE ... O0
8v01un30sun,
True (regarding Ha'Mung Ha'Bible vocabs). I read a verse/line/publication taken from a research book (referencing HA'Mung Ha'Bible) and apparently the word/phrase "ee kawm xim ... ???" (don't recall exactly; though can always look it up in my book again) means/refers to "an angel/angels" ... :2funny:
I even asked both my parents of/about this HA'Mung/Hmong word/phrase afterwards, and they looked at me "puzzled/confused". But that's what the words/phrase is and says, and is translated aZZ (no joke; I can even CITE the source if all ya HA'Mung want ... KEKEKE ... 8) ... ::)
Some of the HA'Mung Ha'Bible words/names/vocabs ARE OBVIOUSLY all made up by the Working/Live-In Missionaries of/at the time among the HA'Mung/Hmong. Examp: Yexus(Jesus), Maus-Xim(Moses), Lus(Luke), Ntsau-Xawm(Joseph), and some I've never heard of or can even pronounce at a glance etc. etc. etc.; clearly/definitely without a doubt ARE NOT/AM NOT of Hmong authencity/origin, and are made-up/fabricated words/vocabs which to most/ALL Hmong -- NOT the Ha'Bible HA'Mung whore-shippers -- would not have a clue what it is etc. ... KEKEKE ... >:D.

This is kind of difficult to answer because no translation is perfect, so I often find myself going back and forth between the King James and the NIV in my bible studying time. Both are done from the originals. Most modern translation goes back to the original Greek language. However, I would advise to stay way from the Revised Standard because the translator of the RS were committed to stay as close as to the King James. So it's not a pure translation from the Greek. I'm sure you are aware of this fact.
Which one do I like best? King James! King James was put together by a man named Eramus and was done using the Textus Receptus Greek text. The NIV was put together by current scholars who used the Novum Testamentum Graece text. But most Christians would probably tell you that the NIV is more accurate because it is based on more earlier texts. When Eramas put the KJ together he only have a dozen of text to work with in the 15th century. Ever since then more and more manuscript has been discovered and this is where the NIV comes in. But some of the text has been omitted and left out in the NIV, whereas it is in the King James and were taught. I would still stick to the King James though. Earlier doesn't not mean better. :)

There's nothing wrong with this. We know who is meant regardless of spelling. What is done here is they're just trying to get as close as to the name as possible.

chido,
:idiot2:
Boy, you have outdone yourself this time! :2funny: I would think that if you were going to point out inaccurate translations in the Hmong Bible, you wouldn't use people's names. :idiot2: :2funny:
Tus niag "tsiv-taum" no yog quav dev xwb os! He isn't even bright enough to conclude that those are just "Ha-mungnized" ways of pronouncing the names and aren't meant to be "translations". Even the Japanese have a whole set of alphabets to write foreign words for such purposes. Those Japanese! ::)

If you just want to read, then it doesn't really matter which version. The NIV might be easier to read though. That being said, not all versions are "acceptable" to everyone. For example, the wording in KJV and the NIV can carry a slightly different interpretation . Also, some verses are simply non-existent in the other.
It should also be noted that the NIV was revised as recently as 2011.
There are also children Bibles. These might be good for those not wanting to get too deep into the theology.
There are also many "study Bibles" out there. You may find these useful if you want to get into the theology, history, etc.
And of course, there are books that challenge the Bible. You can Amazon those if that is your interest.

Get NIV or NKJ. Both are acceptable. There are Hmong Bibles. Check out CMA. They did their best with translation... as you know Hmong have limited vocabulary and our grammar system is simplified and very contextual with social norm.
I have an iPhone app for free so I have all of them :) It's FREE.
Thanks, I've read some review on NIV and NKJ. I'm kinda eying NAB/NABRE. As for the Hmong bible, I was just curious. Good you have the bible on your phone. Don't know if I'd ever go that far.

So that's how you see the bible. Interesting.

I don't plan to read through. Just need a new one and was curious as to what others used. I know about the differences in the bibles, etc.

Sometime the KJV is too hard for me to read because of the sentence structure and definition of the word in between each passage. So I had to switch newer bible as NLT. Both are the same thing but NLT helps me translate the whole scripture a lot better in plain English.

The iPhone app has audio of the bibles.
That's nice. Some of those words can be difficult to pronounce and/or translate.

Go to the Hmong District of the C & MA for ordering a Hmong Bible. The current Hmong Bible is undergoing review and editing. It should be done and going to print some time end of this year or earlier part of next year.

The King James Version. It's more accurate...

Here is a challenge for all of you....
instead of getting the latest copy or the best copy...why not get the "oldest" you could find and read it. it might shed some light on understanding and accepting the words of the book. based on person experience, new ones are too "new." words are changed, rephrased, and more....it may be beautiful words, but as i kept on saying, beutiful words are misleading.

Any version to understand the fundamentals but always cross reference with those who are able to read Greek and Hebrew for a better understanding. Translation kills the passion of the message. There is a big difference between the serpent seduced or tempted eve.

Update.
I ended up getting a NIV bible. I also have the DRB (Douay Rheims Bible) on my phone. I find the NIV easier to understand.
For instance in Luke 6:39-40
NIV: He also told them this parable: Can the blind lead the blind? Will they not both fall into a pit? The student is not above the teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like their teacher.
DRB: And he spoke also to them a similitude: Can the blind lead the blind? do they not both fall into the ditch? The disciple is not above his master: but every one shall be perfect, if he be as his master.
I've compared the ones I use to the ones at church, which we have like 3 or 4 different types/versions, and they are all different, yet translate to the same meanings. I can easily see how people can interpret them differently based on their life experiences though. It's very interesting.

Bit late. But yes. There are Hmong translated bibles. My brother has one.
Can you take a photo from your bro's Hmong bible of the scripture above and post it? I want to see the Hmong translation. Maybe have him take a photo and send it to you.

Be careful with the NIV. Text are being skewed on purpose so that it will not offend other people, denomination and what not. Take for instance the famous John 3:16
John 3:16New International Version (NIV) 16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
John 3:16American Standard Version (ASV) 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth on him should not perish, but have eternal life.
So asked yourself, what is the difference between the word begotten Son and his one and only son. O0

In 2012, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops "announced a plan to revise the New Testament of the New American Bible Revised Edition so a single version can be used for individual prayer, catechesis and liturgy" in the United States.

This is what the mother ship uses. Anybody wants to butcher that bible version to death? Be my guest. :2funny:

I love my NIV. I like all the bibles actually. If I could have one version of each, I'd be in heaven...haha.
As for the scripture, begotten in this context means one and only, which is the same thing.
Try not to focus on how you think everyone is reading the bible incorrectly and focus on how the bible can help you be a better person. :)
Why not use the NKJ?
'Cause I haven't found a good one. I'm also looking into a good NABRE and/or ESV for journaling. I think NIV has a really nice one that just came out that I'm considering as well even though I already have one but I'd like another one for journaling.

which one?
You pick. :)

moonangel,
Are you Catholic? The Catholic Youth Bible is pretty easy to understand. It also includes extra study notes and examples that are relevant to modern times.

Maybe this is just for my own FYI...so that when I do purchase another bible I'll remember that:
1. The NIV and NASB are protestant based bibles and are missing 7 books from the NABRE.
2. KJV comes closest to the NABRE in scriptures but KJV is still short 7 books.
3. For journaling, choose KJV or ESV if possible, otherwise go with NIV (they have single column text and lightly lined margins for journaling).
4. ESV has interleaved bibles. Definitely planning on one of these for full page journaling.
5. KJV has best creative and beautiful designs. Definitely need one for visual inspiration.
6. For serious bible reading, the Catholic DRB.
I wish NABRE would have journaling bibles. I've looked everywhere and they don't exist.
* Journaling refers to art journaling.

I don't read bible but I like to scroll through the Mormon and JW one. Mormon can't stand understand anything. It I like that they have little number 1-2-3 and then in the bottom of the page break it to easy understanding of the phrase/sentence.
I like the KJV much better because I grew up reading more from it beside the Hmong CMA bible. Someone gave me a N?.. Version that was good too. I don't like to keep bible but we do have Mormon and JW over once in a while but I'm never there for the session.

Cool. I'd like to get my hands on a Mormon and JW bible.

KJV is the original and it is the best book to its quality of originality.
I'm glad you like the KJV. Why do you think it is the best book? Did you know that the first translator of the KJV was a Roman Catholic priest?
-
Duh! Catholicism came first before Protestants.
I'm a Protestant and an Arminianist. I don't follow Calvinism.

I now have a NIV bible and a Catholic bible. The journaling bible I want is an interleaved ESV bible but it's very expensive. I'm hoping to get it though so I could start journaling. Right now I'm writing my scriptures in my planner and it's working okay but not the way I'd like to continue doing it.
Btw, the Catholic bible is amazingly beautiful. There's a photo of the pope on the inside page and also pages to write in baptism date, first communion date, confirmation date, family history, family members names, and matrimony info. There are maps of the holy land, etc., and descriptions of each books in the bible. It's very detailed. My NIV bible just goes straight to the books. Very interesting to see the differences. I still like my NIV, don't get me wrong. It's very simple and easy to get around. It's am amazing bible in itself.

Take a look at this church still in building. It is a 60 minutes show documentary about this amazing journey by a vision from an architecture who was well ahead of his times. This host woman is also hot. :D

Compare them--all of them. If you do, I will tell you that there are typography errors in there. Peter is the worst writer in Greek. You can try reading HIS stuff, but I am telling you, Peter can't write Greek pho shiit! He can only write Hebrew; however, in Greek, he sucks asss.
Read everything text from old to new. If you read Hebrew, that's even better. If you read in Hebrew AND Greek (Old testament in Hebrew and New Testament in Greek), then I will consider you as a scholar by now. The originals are always better. Translation for other words to that words are difficult to translate. Some words cannot be translated, which indeed cause some problem to every people who wants to know the meaning of it.
I'm actually not here to criticize the bible or anything and I'm also not here to read the bible all the way through. I'm actually following some scriptures and write them down in my planner and as I read them, I look into my life and see how I've followed the path of Christ or strayed and my reasons for following or straying and how I can learn to do better in my life as a follower of Christ. As Catholics we focus everything on God so I try to look at the scriptures as simply God's words as well because ultimately, it comes down to that.
Anyway, I'm not comparing bibles as to which one's better than the other. I enjoy reading the different interpretation s. My heart is with the Catholic church so it's easy for me to read other bibles and other religions' thoughts and ideas without feeling like I am pulled away. They all kind of build on each other.
I am not a hardcore Catholic, btw. I've just grown up in the religion and have had my issues with the formalities but I've grown to like it somehow.

That's amazing. Catholic churches are always so beautiful. There is a church in the Archdiocese where I live and it is so immaculately beautiful. I actually cried when I stepped foot in that church. My dad was with me at the time but I felt so peaceful and felt this strong energy from God or something...it was powerful and I just broke down and cried. My dad of course saw me wiping my tears and said, "There's no reason to cry." I said, "I know but it's so beautiful." Then we left quickly because I didn't want to cry anymore. I'll never forget that.

Very well moonangel
I no longer get that feeling of yours but from time to time, i get goosebumps when there is a ritual that the holy spirit is presented.
It is paranormal scientifically proven that the ghost radar goes off when there is a spirit or ghost presence.
You know why you cried? It is becausr you are overwhelmed. Like if i see god or jesus christ, i shall pee in my pants and wheeping of joy for i am not worthy to see him but seeing him or hearing him, i shall be healed. O0

OMG I forgot about this topic.
