Ford's Fusion V6 Sport Can Skip Over Potholes


When Ford's new Fusion V6 Sport debuted at the Detroit Auto Show last month, we said it would come with dampers "that can detect potholes and automatically adjust the shocks to minimize impact ." Now, Ford has revealed what the system looks like in practice and visually, it's fairly incredible.

The Fusion's adaptive dampers read road conditions every two milliseconds and when it detects the edge of a pothole, it automatically stiffens the particular wheel's damper to its stiffest setting. Effectively, it allows the Fusion to skip over potholes...

Ford claims this is the only midsize sedan currently on sale to offer this tech, but other advanced suspension systems of the past achieved similar effects. The hydropneumatic suspension in the Citroën DS was well known for its ability to iron out any imperfections and Bose (yes, that Bose) developed a crazy suspension that could literally jump over bumps.

The development of modern suspensions systems that can mitigate poor roads while providing excellent handling is incredibly impressive. We're certainly excited to go pothole hunting in the Fusion V6 Sport.

Is it anything like the tien I forget what it is..

But I believe Koni came up with the system first...

Tien followed suit.


I was reading an article about it a few years ago when I was looking at suspension.

LEt me see if I can find it real quick.

Progressive dampening happens when the suspension components and the computer works together and adjusts itself according to what's happening in real time.

If you read the quote above carefully it says the Ford system adjust itself BEFORE it even hits the hole. It sounds more like a radar system that is continuously scanning the car and the surface areas around the car much like bumper sensors do and windshield wipers these days that tell the car to stop or the wipers to turn on or not.

Another thing that makes people more lazy and the roads less safe.
