I went squirrel hunting and the best thing about it is the hike.... and the nature scenery. Anyone into squirrels hunting?
-
Not my thing.
-
I would love to go but no squirrel around here. Would have to really travel for them critters.

J/w... do you eat squirrels? Some people don't so they don't hunt.I would love to go but no squirrel around here. Would have to really travel for them critters.
Yes, you have to know the spot like fishing...and depends where you live too. I love the beautiful hike and this year we have a lot of mosquitoes. Good thing I wore a hat w/ mosquitoes net and was protected.
-
I don't eat squirrels. When I was a little kid, we found some red baby rats on our thatch roof and I got really scared of rats and all rodents since then. I can look at a furry squirrel but not one like those that have been singed or cut up.
I'm a big game hunter. I hunt deer and ...well, have yet to get to bears and coyotes. But I hunt deer with my bow and gun.

I went deer hunting last week.During lunch, I took off to a local Chinese restaurant. I met two Hmong guys there. They said they were hunting squirrels and that they already got two that morning. We all agreed with you: gotta go far to find those critters.

Hmmmm I C. While hunting big game, did you come across any wild mushrooms? FYI, I'm not into venison...so don't care too much about deer hunting but I know people who are.
-
Anything is something for only some people, not for anybody or everybody. Squirrels aren't for me. But venison is.
Yes, I've come across mushrooms: morels, peacock back, puff balls and some others that I can't identify and don't know if are edible. Morels are secrets. But puff balls--if anyone wants some, I know a place that grows some every year. There are many ready to go right now.
Did you shoot when you were last out squirrel hunting?

Used to years ago but not anymore...

No, I go to enjoy nature, keep my husband company, and for the hike. Can you post a picture of those mushrooms you mentioned? I wonder if they're the same ones I came across.

I shoot them in my yard and around my neighborhood O0
But then again I only eat squirrels once a year at most :P
-
No, I haven't come across those mushrooms. My husband and I picked some that looked like clusters of oysters mushrooms and they were alright. Oh my love to come across morels. I heard they're highly prized....and the other ones love to try them too. Good for you.
-
i love eating them rodent
i just love eating the head and sucking out the brain
better than beef
-
I pick morels but I don't pick the other kinds. Yes, morels are expensive, taste real good, and hard to find.

What if you have shot the head off?
i don't shoot the head
i do bodyshot
so i can eat the head
-
almost deer season too
need to take out the rifle to the range and zero
make sure everything is good
-
Do you always have that choice? I mean, don't squirrels hit their bodies in a hole and you see only the heads with eyes looking at you?

Gotta do that with mine soon, too.
This past weekend, I already went to the woods and got the stand all fixed up. Don't wanna wait for a colder weather just a week before the shooting hours to fix the stand. I had wanted to do it in August already but didn't have the time then.

hunting is hard, man
don't aim for the head if you not going hit it
see a lot rookies shooting at every angle
and missing and scaring them squirrel away
you better off with a bodyshot
better sucess that way
-
go find tree
that drop nuts
their food source
and just camp there
no need to walk all over the forest
-

I'll keep a look out when I'm in the woods but so far no luck. Good for you.

Hmongrock, what's the peak/best time to spot squirrels? J/W.
-
This year is a good year for squirrel hunting in MN. Trees had plenty of nuts unlike previous years. We bag our limit in a few hours every time we go out. I'm mostly into big game but I know all the hot spots in southern MN because I hunt big game down there.

Right now is a good time
They are out collecting nuts to store and eat for the winter
Go find trees that drop nuts
And just sit and wait
They will come
-
Illegal to bait your game and shoot here in Cali.
A Hmong guy gave me a squirrel in an aluminum foil once. I guess it was all skinned too.
Threw it in the freezer until spring cleaning of the freezer just to find it freezer burn. Had to toss it away.
Haven't had the opportunity to get me a squirrel since cuz the hunting Hmong I know, they don't share. They say to go with them if I want meat. Maybe one day when I have the time.

Lots of deer here
I saw like 15++. Deer carcasses on a 30 miles road stretch
A lot of us Hmong here are starting to hunt for trophy type deer
We’re letting the small, female, young, etc... go
Ain’t about meat these days
More about bragging right
-
i don't hunt squirrels because i don't have an yearning to eat them... many of my family members who are squirrel connoisseurs don't even hunt high country squirrels... said they taste too much like pine needles... they do however prefer eastern plain squirrels where they feed primarily on acorn and corn...
-
Any elk moose there? Fools over here be shooting them. Not sure about shooting the elk regulation either
Lots of cows over here. Why don't they shoot those?
-
I've been squirrel hunting for the past 5 years. It's fun and you do get quiet a good workout. I lived in MN, there's too many hunters, so I traveled to other southern states to squirrel hunt.

plenty of elk here either sex or cow or bull tags... moose are lottery draw tags...
-
animals that i prefer over squirrels... crappy, white-bass, trout, salmon, wipers, walleyes, grouse, marmot, teals, ducks, geese, deer, & elk.. truthfully... these are the only animals i primarily go for... lol!
-
Ok. Thanks. No squirrel down then.

Morels are hard to find and people keep their spots secretive.

If they are carcasses, then all the deer are dead and gone. :2funny:

Have you hunted bears? I'm thinking about it.

Probably why chai Vang came over from MN to hunt in Wisconsin

Good for you. At our last hunt, we got 3 squirrels in 3 hours. We weren't so lucky but the hike was really good, uphill, downhill, etc.. I had a great work out and it shows the next day ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

That's what I heard too down in CA. In the midwest, don't have to worry about that. The taste is very gaming ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D and definitely not like any plants or trees.
-
If you look around, you should see cars running by. Where there are dead deer, there are cars hitting them.

all these talks about squirrels makes me hungry......hu ngry for squirrels
-
Oh yes forgot to add, even if you don't eat squirrels, it's a lucrative business at $10 or more per squirrel which many people are willing to pay or buy. If you sell for less, even better. $5 per squirrel is a bargain :D :D :D :D
-
He wasn't hunting for mushrooms.
Probably why chai Vang came over from MN to hunt in Wisconsin

Anyone have extra or know people who sell them. I want a few.....
-
It's not legal in MN. Might be legal in TX though.

There are bigger red fox squirrels in the south.
