dirt cheap built that can out perform and play games
is one of those pre built dell optiplex on ebay with an i5 and 8gb ram
you add good graphic card than you are all set
something like this, this one has 4gb but find one with 8gb
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-Optiplex-790-Tower-Intel-Core-i5-2500-3-30GHz-4GB-RAM-500GB-HDD/173583295945?hash=item286a5ee5c9:g:mL0AAOSwpFhbl7 HV:sc:USPSPriority (https://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-Optiplex-790-Tower-Intel-Core-i5-2500-3-30GHz-4GB-RAM-500GB-HDD/173583295945?hash=item286a5ee5c9:g:mL0AAOSwpFhbl7HV:sc:USPSPriority)!54401!US!-1:rk:19:pf:0

My youngest wants a pc for gaming. Should I buy from a big box retailer or build one? I don't know anything about gaming and pc :'(

We have a Fry's electronics here. It is like a candy store for computer nerds. I used to live with 2 computer nerds in college. On weekends, they would catch the light rail system to these stores and window shop. They were my IT guys. I'm some what of a computer illiterate because of them. I buy, they install and boot it up for me. Both guys ended up getting their masters.

Definitely built one
Its pretty easy
Even if you don’t have the OS
You can buy them off eBay for $5-10
YMMV but you can even use old keys
Tons of resources
Need a good CPU, graphics card,
Those are the two most important
The rest you can cheap out

Good graphics card goes for 300+
Add in quality mouse and keyboard. That's another 2-300.
The graphics card I link above is pretty
Only $130
Should be able to play games in high setting
60 FPS
Them bitcoin/crypto currency
Jacking up graphics card price
