its great that they get their education all paid for
But the math don’t add up
These college are raking in big money $$$$ millions
I was down in madison, watching my Wisconsin team play
It is almost as big as the NFL
Can’t find no parking space
I had to pay some college kids $30 to park in their lawn
They need to
1. Paid their players
2. Tv deal, ads, commission etc...the money evenly spread among college
3. Tickets sales, food money.... is kept for the school
-
$100k base salary
With bonus on weekly performance
-
The highest paid state worker is a college head coach. Nick Saban makes millions.
-
To answer your question, yes they should be able to receive endorsement deals from sponsors at the very minimum.

I agree with the endorsement deals as long as it doesn't conflict with the university's policies, but college athletes getting paid? Nope. Don't agree.

You just support slavery, free child labor, sweat shop etc...
Because that’s how much they get paid
Nothing
Zero $$$
While the school, teachers, coach and etc....
Collect alllllll the reward
EATING ALL THAT FAT AND GREASE
And the players get nothing
Not even a penny

nope. They don't have to play football while in college. They chose to do so.
-
It can be done. But there will be problems.
Not all schools are equal.
Not all sports are profitable.
With Pay-for-Play you may eliminate whatever parity and competition there is currently. Imagine all the schools with all the assets "employing" all the best athletes.
College athletes are considered amateurs. Paying them would mean reexamining the amateur/pro status both in the college and professional ranks. Will there be an amateur/pro ranking system if college athletes start getting paid? Will there be any distinction between an amateur and a professional athlete?
-
nope. They don't have to play football while in college. They chose to do so.
Or any sports for that matter. How is it slavery when they're getting a free college education in return?
The real issue is the disparity between how much college athletes receive in scholarships (thousands, maybe close to a hundred thousand on the high end) and what the NCAA makes off of them in terms of endorsements, sponsorships and etc.
-
While I don't think college athletes should receive a salary/contract, I think they should be able to receive endorsement deals, a percentage of jersey sales and any merchandise that exploits them. This will avoid problems with equal pay because it will come down to a popularity contest versus equal pay among all athletes and all sports.
-

Yax, bro
You are thinking high school football
Where people “choose” to play
In college, they recruit you
Paid for your schooling
And you play for free
Aka. MODERN DAY SLAVERY GLADIATORS

Checks and balances, bro
And a socialism system
Kinda like in the NFL
They collected TV revenue, sponsored, ads, etc....
And distribution that equally among every team

Look at SLAVERY
the master: pay for your meal, housing, soap, medicine, schooling (if they are nice) etc...
And you work for free
NCAA: they recruit you, paid for your dorm, food, education and you play for free
HOW ARE THOSE TWO THINGS DIFFERENT
UNLESS I AM BEYOND RETARDATION

Again, they're not forced into it. They choose to do it to advertise themselves, in the hopes of getting into the NFL and making millions. It's not slavery if you chose to do it.
-
hmgRock, think of it this way. You come on PH, PH makes money selling Ads. They make money, but they don't pay you. So based on your logic, you're a slave. But we all know that you chose to come here, no one's forcing you to.

Bro...
I have ad blocker
Also yes, you can make money from from watching ads, tv show, taking surveys etc...
Not in here
But other sites

Thats right there is modern day slavery
Come work and play free for me
Get brain injury
Handicapped for life
While you make all the money for me
And i just pay your schooling
THATS SLAVERY
-
Yax
If you want me to work for you for free
Im sorry
Im not coming in
Im still going be hungry at the end of the day

Exactly! The athletes can say the same thing, SORRY I'm not coming in, but they chose to play the game instead. They get paid with cheers and fame. To them, that's enough. Anyone who wants to get paid money to play, can try for the NFL.
-
I say phuck them. It has nothing to do with education. Year after year they ask for more money but a lot of it gets spent on sports facilities and sports programs. Does nothing for academia and learning...
-
California wants to be the first, the pioneer so of speak.
What does this all means on the smaller scale? It is about time all the best players will be transferring to a cali program and we will bring home that trophy.
-
California signed it. It’s been long overdue.
-
Nobody is forcing them too.
It isnt a job.
It is just extreme after school sports thats it.

Again thinking high school sport
In college, you get recruit: free schooling

Yax
These college game, football
Especially basketball during the march maddness
Is big money
Almost as big as the NFL, NBA
Maybe bigger
Talking about millions of $$$$$
Coaches making $5-8 million/year
The players: zero $$ nadda
MODERN DAY SLAVERY GLADIATOR
Greedy F bastard
-
hmgROCK, it ain't slavery.
It's more like modern day corporations. Those at the top receive disproportiona tely more than those at the bottom.
I agree with the argument on endorsements. Game developer EA was forced to use fake names for their college sports games because college athletes were not getting paid by EA to use their likeness in a game. Other than that, THEY'VE chosen to accept the scholarship in return they have to play. Sorry hmgROCK, nothing is free in Life. It's NOT a free education. They can lose their scholarship due to grades and other reasons, see the link below.

Again, it's not slavery if you enjoy doing it and you volunteer to do it. The "Big Money" has nothing to do with the fact that the athletes want to play to show off their skills. You don't get paid to go interview for a job. Think of this as their interview.
-
hmgROCK, I think you're missing the main point.
Slavery, gladiators and etc had no say in becoming slaves or gladiators. Slaves were captured. Gladiators were often soldiers of the losing side that were captured or surrendered.
College athletes CHOSE to play to obtain an education. They were not forced into playing (unless you argue that low income families and students have less options for paying for school).
That's quite the distinction.
If theKING earns $200K because he chose to work however hard he does, you have no right to criticize or complain by working less or minimally. Freedom of choice. That's what you need to understand instead of ranting and raving.
Yes, living wage is an issue. Yes, trickle down economics was a pipedream. But accept the fact that you CAN choose a better paying job/career.
-
What's that saying....when a fool sees wisdom and speaks. Wisdom is the fool that responds. You can't change the epiphany that a fool finds.
-
Well if they pay them, they will have to pay for
Basketball mens and womens
Soccer, mens and women
Volleyball, mens and women
Waterpolo
Baseball
Softball
Hockey mens and womens
Lacrosse mens and womens
All the sports in track and field
Golf
Badmitton
Ultimate frisbee
Swimming
Diving
Ballet team
Dance team
Chess team
Debate team
Etc etc
Basically, any official school sponsored sport/team
They have not realized the can of worm they opened up.
Then the females will complain about equal pay.
Thenthe other sports will complain they are not getting paid enough
In time it will become normal
And most students are paying to go to school if they are not on a scholarship.
So in theory they are asking to go to the school in the first place and to be in thier programs so to demand to be paid is ridiculous.
Seems like to me a bunch of self entitles kids.
They should be happy to have the opportunity to showcase their skills to have a shot a professional job.
Those kids that transfer to other schools to get more playing time, I am sure they are happy just getting playing time. They are not going to care how much they get paid or get paid at all. No student athlete is going to start calculating how much they are getting paid here or there to base thier decision on what school they are going to go to if it is about playing time.

Lol
When the Wisconsin mens basketball team went on that wild run a few years ago
You almost couldn’t find a ticket
They’re were going for $500 a pop
Maybe even $1,000 a pop
Hard to find and get a ticket
The university ate all the fat and grease
ALL FOR ME
NONE FOR YOU
-
Well still, the thing is college sports is not a professional sport.
When you get paid for playing the sport, it then now becomes a professional sport and they considered pros.
Are we now saying these kids are pros in college?
Are college sports now a pro sport?

Its not the PRO stats
Some of these college game are bigger
I see more Florida gator fan than Miami Dolphin
-
There's a distinction between amateur (college athletes) and professionals.
Compensation being the difference. Pros get compensated, amateurs do not. Once amateurs are paid or get paid, they're no longer amateurs.
-
No, I don't think they should get pay. When young people have $$, they're going to slack off on their studies and so you're going to see plenty of athletics w/ money to burn but failing miserably in their academics. I'd rather they be poor and do well in school ;D ;D ;D Also, when you struggles financially, you more motivated.
-
Well, I'm going back to college to become an 8th year senior just because jello pudding pop needs a new spoke person.
