Well, the stories about Abraham sacrificing his son base on eye-witness account, not just a story.
Greek Mythology base on philosophy and analogy to resemble Greek's everyday lives.
The phrase, "the moon eats the sun", is a mere analogy. It means the exact time of Eclipse when the moon cover the sun. Since Mayans were primitive, indigenous being, that's the way their mindset works. They don't evolve or transcend into new age.

What's really "dumb" is not knowing the difference between a trailer and a car as well as don't know that a trailer is a vehicle..
