Maybe bad bosses are causing the worker shortage
The number of job openings remains near record levels, as does the portion of workers quitting their jobs. The end of enhanced jobless aid hasn’t brought a surge of new workers off the sidelines, as some analysts expected.
The national quit-a-thon has legs, and employers may be wasting their breath blaming bad government policies or other external forces for the difficulty finding workers. Instead, they could look at their own role in fueling the Great Resignation. They’d see a lot of problems in the mirror.
“Many of us leading companies have been very focused on getting through the pandemic, and maybe we haven’t been taking as much time and care around our employees and our talent and their development,” Rob Falzon, vice chair of Prudential Financial, said in a recent webinar co-hosted by Yahoo Finance and the Bipartisan Policy Center. “Their learning curves have flattened, they’re working really hard and they’re thinking, ‘I want to advance my career and to do that I may need to go elsewhere.’ Compensation always motivates people, but I think there are more fundamental things at play here.”
In a recent Prudential survey, 46% of workers said they’re looking for a new job, or considering looking. Better pay was the main driver, cited by 45% of those looking to switch. But the second-leading reason was lack of growth opportunities, cited by 26%. That strongly suggests companies that need workers already have people on the payroll who feel underutilized or mistreated and might be able to fill some of the staffing need, if only the bosses would get the message. Somebody’s messing up.
The Covid pandemic has obviously upended work routines at many companies, and managers haven’t yet grasped the changing ways workers think about their jobs. Earlier this year, Microsoft published research showing that business leaders are largely satisfied with the hybrid remote/on-site work routines at their companies, but ordinary workers are not. Employees like the flexibility that comes from remote work, for instance, but in the Microsoft survey of 84 global businesses, 54% of workers said they feel overworked and 39% said they feel exhausted. About 20% said their employer doesn’t care about their work-life balance. Remote workers also tend to feel disconnected from their companies and their colleagues.
By some measures, employers have reacted slowly to the difficulty finding workers. There’s been talk of a labor shortage for a year or more, but there was no notable pickup in average pay until recently. Average hourly earnings are now up 4.8% year-over-year. That’s a solid gain, but inflation is 6.8%, so wage gains still trail price increases. That will only amount to qualify-of-life improvements if inflation comes down but pay hikes stick.
The Atlanta Federal Reserve tracks wage gains for people who switch jobs, and that trend is similar. Job switchers didn’t begin to lock in above-average wage gains until August. The typical job hopper now nets a 5.2% boost in pay, the highest level since 2002. That likely does reflect the impact of workers taking advantage of abundant jobs to get a raise by leaving one job for another.

Of all the things companies can to do lure or keep workers, raising pay is probably the easiest. Improving culture, offering better internal opportunities and promoting career development rely more on good bosses working closely with employees. There’s often no across-the-board solution that brings company-wide improvements. Some bosses just don’t care. Companies run employee-satisfaction surveys all the time, yet workers rarely notice any difference.
If employers are finally raising wages to draw or keep workers, other improvements might follow. During the workplace webinar, Maurice Jones, executive director of the OneTen Coalition, argued that the single best thing companies can do to find more workers is rethink rigid eligibility requirements, such as the need for a four-year college degree. “A big piece of what’s keeping [workers] on the sidelines are systemic barriers that make no sense,” Jones said. “We’re trying to move to a skills-first approach to hiring, to upskilling and mobility and advancement.” His organization is working with 60 companies to scrap academic requirements in favor of looking for specific skills the companies need, which workers might be able to get through community colleges or apprenticeship s instead of a much costlier university degree.
There’s no single thing causing the labor shortage, and no single-bullet solution. With affordable child care in short supply, some parents who want to work have to stay home to care for kids instead. Some people are still worried about getting Covid on the job and are waiting till it feels safer to go back to a crowded workspace. Early retirements have thinned the ranks of older workers. The pandemic has also triggered retrospection and given some people newfound courage to find more rewarding work. Better bosses could probably help with all of those things.

What often happens is that true recognition and appreciation isn't given due. Bosses and HR are force to deal with the majority who are just complainers. These low performers complaints overshadow the real workers. Then the compensation just to appease these low performers. Now what wasn't a problem has just become a problem. Which high performer is gonna stay when low performers are getting way more compensation? Poof = leave. Call it a bad boss. Yeah that has some to do it. But really low performers who are self entitled negotiating better comps for their low performance is the source of the problem.
Wanna keep your workforce? Pay your performers with the real comps to stay. Solution is so simple cuz low performers will need to learn to become good performers to earn higher pay. Not just the job hoppers who don't necessarily perform. True the workplace dynamic isn't so simple.

About 5 millions people quit the job since the pandemic. What those numbers don't tell you is that about 75% of them are over 55.
Before the pandemic, we have people still working like how it is, the norm and retiring? what's that?
Now that the pandemic is pushing the housing market by a big gigantic marginal leap, these over 55 folks net values in their homes are making it easier for them to retire. The other 25%, well they did not quit the labor force but just quitting to join a different industry.

A lot of managers know who I am b/c 2 coworkers got covid-19 and they were out for 5 weeks. I worked 5 weeks without out anyone telling to since the work load starts with the department I'm in. If I just worked my shift, production would of stopped and my bosses would of gotten chewed out. My bosses told their bosses that I kept the place going. All these managers came and thanked me. The 4th in command of the company gave me an award along with a bonus. Also, a few of these managers are car enthusiasts including one of my bosses. Just so happens that I drive a corvette and they've owned a corvette before. So we talk about cars. Me working 5 weeks straight wasn't an issue for me since it's my nature to work and get shit done. I've learned to do my job to the best of abilities so the big bosses stays off my bosses back in which they stay off back so I can do whatever I want when my tasks for the day are completed. I'm the only employee that's not in a management position where I can go on breaks whenever I want. A lot of my coworkers feel entitled to do whatever they want but don't put in the work. I make enough to live comfortably but of course I want a raise that reflects my work ethics but my freedom is also important. There are days when I don't do jack and I have to find something to do. Albeit I've been with the company for 9+ years and I know what I'm doing helps. People tend to forget that we work to get paid and not socialize or complain.

That's good that you have a good system of measurable assessment.
The current assessment we have for performance, has no demerits on it. It so messed up, you can't even say that these workers need to work on ________. Rating is measure of good job, sometimes performs better than most, is an example leader to those around. Really! Everyone is an example because everyone affects the performance of those around them. A good worker only makes those around them look more lazy. A lazy worker drags all around them to a lesser output. These are most of the ones I've got to work with. At the end of the day, thank you, thank you for showing up, thank you for doing a good job. >:D

It can also depend on the industry you're in. I'm in Sales and as long as I meet my quota, I get a yearly raise and I move forward.
I recall while in Production you were treated as a group and that's when the dynamics of the efficient/nonefficient workers came into play. You were forced to pick up the slack or "suffer" as a whole.

lols, yo last year when i be at Amazon, i got a ton of chicks feeling sorry for me cuz I always be doing the physical labor intensive ass as jobs. Some even complain to the managers...but when the manager tell em, Curse volunteer to do it, he won't do anything else....they then start to call me dog too...why? i unknowinly raise the standards, and that to the lazy fukers is pretty much a "green light"...lmao

These days, I got to have a job that I can be in control of my destiny instead of fearing of getting fired if I don't produce them numbers. A job with good benefits as my work is paying 100% of my health, vision, dental so they don't deduct from my paycheck. I also get free 401k, the company puts in instead of you put in and they match. Work my 25 years and retire with a pension cuz depending on social security, there might not be any social security left when I do retire at 67 cuz they are going to raise that limit when people are starting to live longer.
Gotta work on that retirement package. You could live on social security alone if your house is payed off and live the bare minimum but what if you need a new roof or emergency funds? Your social security will not be enough to pay for these so you need to invest in a nest that would take care of that issue for you.
If you have control of your work, they can't fire you and leaving is now up to you. I like the sound of that. I keep on jumping jobs till I find that match for me. O0

Motto is different here, got to bring your best game. Even if everyone is high performance, someone will fill each bracket all the way down to low performance. You don’t want to be at the lower end of high performance, you will still be designated into the low performance brackets if everyone outshines you.

I remembered as a kid (ages 12-15)working in the field under the hot sun 12 hours/day from 5am to 5pm during the Summer season, if you don't work, you don't get paid, simple as that..
There was no hourly wages nor salaries so you get paid for exactly the work that you do...
It was hard work but taught me a good life lesson from early on..

Field work is tough and I’ve been there in the early 80s. I give lots of props to our Hmong farmers for continuing. I’m genuinely considering moving to the countryside and grow my crops, raise my animals with none of that additives.

Let's take theking for example. Could this guy be any more detested in the real world? I can pick up on his vibe as a terrible human being - if we can even call him that. Everything this guy does is super calculated in order to avoid any missteps that will garner him even more scrutiny and judgment from his clan and the Hmong community. You can't convince me that a guy spawned by a man whom he claims is super toxic and a loser, isn't judged under a microscope by his clan and community.
