A few years ago, I bought a seine about $400.00 or so and took it to Lake Superior.
I fell onto the water while fighting to pull the heavy seine out of the waives. I struggled
near shore to get myself up on my feet. I kept pushing the ground with one hand while
the other was holding onto the seine. My feet lost control, were just floating, and the water was beating
me down. (My partner was way on the other end and didn't
even pay attention to my struggling.)
A young Hmong guy netting nearby lifted my shirt collar and I was able to stand on
my feet again. Thanks so much to him now as I did then. I would have started swallowing water
if he didn't help with that little touch.
I sold then seine for $200.00 soon after.
Nowadays, I net with cast nets instead. Both hands on the handle and not going deep
into the water than knee-high.
You think the outdoors is all adventurous and safe? Not so. It's full of dangers, too.
-
Reach the net down to the bottom of the stream where they gather to
lay eggs to the sands and pebbles.

YOU GOT BAPTIZED!!!!
-
Yeah. That would be my second time getting
baptized. The first was in church when I was
a teenager.
Thank God for having the Hmong
guy near me. And, again, thanks for the Hmong
guy for reaching out to pull me up.

Like i say
Ain’t no fish or deer is ever worth dying for
If you that desperate to eat fish
Just buy them at the stores
I tell my crew not to go fall out
Plus im always watching the young joes
If wave is too big
We just drink beer and eat BBQ on the fire till it comes down
O0 O0
-
I'm happy enough having just 22 smelts for the season like
I once did on that one old trip. I don't eat too many smelts.
But it's fun seeing them beating on my net
under the moonlight. That's why I go smelting.
It's good to go with a few trusted people. I don't
have many people going with me--not even the wifey--
there's no wifey to tag along anyway. So, I have to
be extra careful each time.

Your family and relatives
Those are your trusty worthy peeps
I’m just teaching the young buck and joes
Supervisor them
Make sure everyone is safe
Probably just 1-2 beer so i stay sober
-
Not everyone in a family is crazy about smelting. lol
The guy I sold the seine to did invite me to join his team. I can
still join them if I want to.
But I only want to use cast nets.
-
Look at the size of our delta smelt.
And guess what? They got worms. Happy eating :2funny:

Damn
Those fishes are really going at it. ;D ;D
Just pick it up with my hand
Looks like you gotta time it right though
-
Of course, you have to time it right. Their sexual peak happens only over a few nights.
Not just that, the temperature has to be just right.
The birds, otters, raccoons, and even bobcats love picking them up, too.

Back when I lived in Santa Barbara, you could go grunion fishing but the catch was that you can only use your bare hands.

I thought noodling was illegal.
How are you going to catch enough with just your hands? Did anyone get their limits?
When I was a boy in Laos, we noodled but we were happy with just one or two snakeheads in
the muddy holes.

Damn
Thats a nice net
Probably worth hundred
;D ;D
Im cheap when it comes to fishing
-
It’s top quality. I even paid extra to have it treated
So that it would last extra long.
-
a hmong brother on facebook went to duluth went a few night ago
and they started to come in
not the big haul yet..
but a few gallon milk jug to chow
last night was a skunked
-
Our DNR went to the shores last week and said there were still debris
flowing down the streams and ice still thawing in the lake. No smelting
activities yet, they said.
But I don't trust the report. Hmong reports are more accurate, cuz
Hmong are there every day, every night now.
I'll check the water temperature for Park Point and see if it's
good enough for the smelts to come out yet. It's time. Just
not sure of the temp that will draw them to shore or repel them to the deep
for a few more days.
-
Check out current views of Lake Superior to see how the ice is
doing. Ashland side.

The hmong brother on Facebook went Tuesday night
Only a few gallon
Its still cold and ice here in Wisconsin
Late winter
-
Water is still thick. Ice not quite gone yet as of today.
But waves are doing their work: hitting the ice sheets off
like fish nibbling off a big bait.
Tomorrow to Tuesday might see more actions. There's been
very little actions so far.
But that doesn't mean you shouldn't be there. They are too
unpredictable. They would be storming out tonight...any time
now.
-
I’m just doing walleye fishing
Got a few of them
Didn’t keep any
It will be awhile till i smelt
This late winter is hard
-
It’s anybody’s preference. No one can force another to go smelting.
-
The fish are smelting, too.

im good for this year
-
Didn’t get the mother load we wanted
to share with the relatives and friends
But
Enough to spread around with my crew
;D ;D
-
Last night was a bit better but not much more. However, see how they put eggs
around pebbles under the water? Well, those eggs won't ever hatch ever for next year.
Their population is lowered by this pebble's plight from last night.

Yes.
I'm not a Yang, so I

Not much and they are still running tonight to the next 2 or 3 days.
But we aren't going back till next spring. Gotta let these blistered hands

lol
i already got my share last weekend
you ever smelt in the snow before???
it has been a long cold winter here
(https://i.imgur.com/37cKywH.jpg)
-
Never in the snow before. I don't want to have to reel 100 times for just 100 smelts (or fewer, if they fall off the hook).
