...We were really dirt poor in Laos, still dirt poor in the refugee camp in Thailand. When we arrived to the U.S., we were still poor but not dirt poor. Due to language barrier, not many sustainable opportunities available but we did what we can as family to get by.
Personally, I scraped and crawled for many years before being able to transition to the middle-class. Considering all those barriers and struggles during the early years here, I did OK overall.
I'm still not rich nor wealthy as I'm just a middle-classer but I can easily move decent amounts (over 10K) of my money around with no problem when I want to. Definitely a big jump in socio-eco status as well as stability progression from my days in that sh!t hole, Laos. I feel blessed as well as grateful for the opportunities I fought for and earned to get to where I'm at right now. I'm content with life right now so no need to make any changes at the moment! O0

I may not be able to afford a nice exotic car that cost a few hundred grands but I can still buy a car on the higher end spectrum so I'm doing OK for a middle-classer considering my dirt poor background in Laos as well as my no English and poor background here in the US back in the day...

My wife may not be able to do the HP Omen X Emperium monitor without some financial and overall value considerations but the she can still get one on the higher end of the spectrum with zero financial worries...that still meets her criteria...

To get a $10k bag regularly would make my wife think about the financial aspect but she can get a $1-2k bag with no worries because that's within our middle class budget.

Some folks still trying to convince me to put my money in a CD every now and then by saying things like "let your money work for you"...but I'm still content so no need..
It's like eating at a buffet, you're full and content but some still try to convince you to eat some more... ;D

Some of those same folks also tried to convince us to have more kids because they believe in bigger family = more prosperities.. .
But nope we are STILL content where we're at:
Having kids is NOT a requirement in life so don't force it if you're not ready. Otherwise, it's not fair to the kid...
After my wife and I got married, it took us a couple years to decide if we want kids or not...
We've decided to start with one and the reassess. Been several years now and we are still very content with one and done... O0

When I said we did what we could to survive in the 70s here in the U.S., it included us kids taking advantage of California's CRV so we recycled the heck out of recycling when ever possible such as the weekends. Back then most of soda products were in glass bottles so it's 10 cents per bottle. Heavy as heck hauling it to the grocery stores and/or recycle centers on foot but it helped. We cut the neighbors' grass and some neighbors only have the manual mower so lots of labor involved especially for young kids but it helped the family. We washed the neighbors' cars with no set price, just donation and that helped too. Single mom and all of us kids pitched in as family to survive. Don't want to wish that on any kid out there as a kid should just enjoy being a kid but it was a good life lesson.
Those are just a few examples of the things we do to survive during our early years here in America back in the 70s.
Took a long time for us to become middle-classers except for my oldest sister but we've all made it and that life lesson taught us a very important lesson about work ethics, intrinsic motivation and perseverance. I don't categorized my oldest sister as a middle-classer because she's actually the most successful out of all of us. I say she's in the upper middle to rich tier. She had less education opportunity because she's older but she was smart minded and worked the hardest to get to where she is now. She's the only one in the family with7 figure bank account vs. 6 figure for the rest of us younger siblings.
