"Vice President Gore's decision to break with President Clinton and plunge into the Elian Gonzalez controversy roiled his relationships within his party yesterday, with some congressional leaders saying they were surprised by his decision and some lawmakers expressing open contempt for a move they felt further politicized a family tragedy.

The strongest reaction came from Rep. Jose E. Serrano (D-N.Y.), who wrote Gore that he was "shocked and outraged" by Gore's endorsement of legislation that would extend permanent resident status to 6-year-old Elian, his father and other relatives living in Cuba."
