The Most Annoying People in Airport Security, According to the TSA
Don't be that passenger.
The vast majority of the travel experience is magical, from spending the night at an incredible hotel to exploring a brand-new place to dining in all those restaurants you've been looking forward to. There is, however, one small spot that can cause an undue amount of stress: getting through airport security. And that is usually due to passengers who try and cheat, hasten, or trick the system.
To help ensure you're never that traveler in the airport security line, we asked the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to pinpoint the biggest troublemakers. This way, you can easily avoid being the most annoying person at airport security. Here's what a former Transportation Security Officer (TSO), now a TSA spokesperson, had to say.
The Line Skipper
"Depending on the airport, passengers may be surprised to learn there could be more than one line for security," our TSA insider shared. "Trusted traveler programs such as TSA PreCheck and TSA PreCheck Touchless ID often have separate queues, and getting in the wrong one could potentially add time to getting through the checkpoint."
The TSA recommends passengers take a moment to ensure they are in the right place before getting in line. "To make sure passengers have plenty of time, remember to allow for parking/shuttle transportation, airline check-in, obtaining a boarding pass, and going through the security screening process," the TSA spokesperson said. Want to really get ahead? Check how busy the airport is likely to be on your travel day based on historical data by downloading the MyTSA app.
The Rule Breaker
Breaking the rules, the TSA spokespersons said, generally comes from not knowing the rules or passengers simply forgetting. "We strongly suggest passengers take advantage of AskTSA to answer any questions they have before they travel," they shared. "TSA is dedicated to answering any questions on prohibited and permitted items, identification requirements, and much more." AskTSA is available any time of day and year via the X account, on Facebook Messenger, on Apple Business Chat, and via text by texting "Travel" to AskTSA (275-872).
The Overpacker
Overpacking, according to our TSA insider, not only leads to disorganizatio n, but it can also cause "a stressful experience." So, the TSA recommends passengers get organized when they enter the line. That includes having their ID and boarding pass ready, "placing items such as keys and wallets into a carry-on bag, and thinking about what they’ve packed one last time to make sure they don’t have any prohibited items." The One Who Refuses to Take Off Their Shoes
While our insider noted the "requirement that passengers remove shoes ended in July 2025," some travelers may still be asked to do so if additional screening is required. So, please, just unlace your kicks so they can do their check, and we can all move on.
The Traveler With Too Many Liquids
It's critical to be mindful of your liquids, as this is one of the TSA's hard and fast packing rules. "Travelers who pack oversized liquids, gels, and aerosols in their carry-ons potentially slow the process not just for them, but for everyone," the insider said. "Each oversized liquid requires a bag search, and more bag searches mean slower lines for everyone. Remember, if you can spill it, spray it, spread it, pump it, or pour it, it is a liquid, aerosol, or gel and must be packed in a checked bag if it exceeds the 3.4-ounce limit."
