The shooter, Jose Ibarra - an illegal from Venezuelan, was apprehended by US border patrol in 2022 but was released into the country. In 2023, he was arrested for shoplifting but was release again by Chicago police due to their sanctuary policies. He shot Sheridan Gorman in the back while wearing black clothes and a black mask.
