This U.S. Waterfall Is Nicknamed the ‘Niagara of the West’—and It’s Even Bigger Than Its Namesake
Shoshone Falls in Idaho is taller than Niagara Falls and features a stunning horseshoe shape.
Niagara Falls may be the largest waterfall in North America by volume, but a lesser-known, lesser-visited falls in Idaho, nicknamed the “Niagara of the West,” is actually higher than its moniker namesake.
Shoshone Falls in south-central Idaho, drops an impressive 212 feet into the Snake River. Like Niagara Falls, it is horseshoe-shaped and made up of many cascades. The roaring Snake River meets the cliff, which stretches over 900 feet across the canyon, and drops dramatically into a green pool, often creating a misty rainbow. From there, the water continues along the 1,078-mile Snake River corridor.
Much of the falls’ power comes from the natural narrowing of the Snake River before the cliff; the water is pushed into a 400-foot-wide riverbed marked by islands before it meets the falls, which releases the water over a broad 900-foot-wide lip. The effect is most powerful during the spring runoff, when melting snow brings water levels up.
The falls are named after the Shoshone (or Shoshoni), a Native American tribe who lived in the area and fished on the Snake River. The falls also drew travelers on the Oregon Trail who would detour to see the sight in the mid-19th century. In 1974, stunt performer Evel Knievel attempted to jump across the Snake River Canyon, near Shoshone Falls. The failed attempt was one of the last jumps of Knievel’s career.
In addition to viewing the “Niagara of the West” from the viewing platform, the Shoshone Falls park has hiking trails, picnic areas, playgrounds, and even a boat ramp. The area is also popular among rock climbers and the nearby Dierkes Lake has great swimming and additional hiking trails. Downriver from the Shoshone Falls are the Pillar Falls, a low waterfall split by rock pillars.
Shoshone Falls is owned by the city of Twin Falls, Idaho, which is located 15 minutes to the south. Entrance to both the falls and Dierkes Lake is $5 per car from March to September. Entrance is free over the winter. However, the best time to visit is typically in the spring and early summer, when the snow has melted and the water levels are high, resulting in a powerful flow. Later in the summer and into the fall, much of the Snake River water is diverted for irrigation, which dramatically decreases the power of the falls (although they continue to flow).

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s plan to open a $30 million, city-owned grocery store in East Harlem is aimed for a site that was already approved for a $25 million public upgrade years ago — setting the stage for a bizarre boondoggle that has perplexed local business leaders, The Post has learned.
La Marqueta, the food-focused market between East 111th and East 119th streets under the elevated Metro North tracks on Park Avenue, is where Mamdani last month proposed to open a government-owned supermarket. Unlike neighboring stores, the new grocer would be able to offer rock-bottom prices because it wouldn’t pay rent or taxes.
That same site, however, already won approval from the city’s Economic Development Corporation nearly a decade ago for a $25 million project to redevelop La Marqueta — bringing the total price tag of the market’s proposed makeover to a staggering $55 million, city officials confirmed.

The woman whose interaction with Florida police went viral after she was written a ticket alleging she was driving while holding her phone in her nonexistent right hand has opened up about her experience to CBS News, saying she hopes the uncomfortable situation will result in more awareness for those with limb differences.
Kathleen Thomas, 36, was driving in Lake Worth, Florida, in February when she was pulled over by a deputy from the Palm Beach Sheriff's Office. The deputy said he had seen her phone in her right hand. After confirming what he said, Thomas revealed her right arm stops at the elbow.
Thomas said she thought it was just a misunderstandi ng. But despite the impossibility of Thomas using her phone with her right hand while driving, the deputy ultimately wrote the ticket.
"Initially, [I thought], 'Oh, this is going to be funny, which is why I laughed,'" Thomas exclusively told CBS News. "I cackled, more like it. But then it became very apparent when he did not laugh or interact in like, a friendly manner, that it was not going to go that way."
She added, "I wouldn't say it put me on edge, but it definitely left an unsettling feeling of, 'OK, what is this? Where are we going with this?'"
The viral bodycam video shows the deputy continuing to ask Thomas if she was using her phone with her right hand. Then the officer asks her to swear, "hand to God," that she hadn't been using her device. Thomas raises her right arm. The officer responds by telling her to raise her left, and only, hand.
"Immediately, I was being my normal self and threw up my hand to God. He did not recognize that as a sufficient hand to raise to God, which is ironic considering that's who gave it to me," said Thomas, who was born with her lower right arm missing. "He proceeds to ask me to do my left, which is like, 'OK, cool.' Watching it after the fact, getting that bodycam footage over the weekend and sitting with it, I realized immediately that I felt very uncomfortable."
