random restarts when playing games [SOLVED]
« on: June 23, 2014, 07:45:28 AM »
this started a few weeks ago

it only happens when:
1. i'm playing installed games
2. typically late at night after my computer has been on for bout 12 hours

i've tried:
1. temperature apps, the CPU and GPU measurements are within limits

from what i've researched, the most likely cause is a bad/failing PSU...which is not what i want to hear

so why does it only restart when i'm playing games?

oh, and when i say restart, there's no BSOD, it just restarts, just like i had pressed the reset button

any comments would be appreciated, thanks guys n gals

Don't know anything about that...but when I used to play Diablo...it never fails when I'm in a heated battle against a tough mini boss or floor boss the the game just freezes on me after several hours of playing.

The real villain is looking at you.  The last hero was just not true.  If everything works out in the end.  It's because all things make amends.

It could just be your power supply.

Are you measuring the temperature while you're gaming?
It may not be your reason, but I used to have a problem with this as well.  There were two things, first my PSU wasn't strong enough to power everything I had running.  Also when I did get a strong enough PSU my CPU was overheating so I had to get an aftermarket cooler.  Everything's running smoothly now.

I believe there's a site that will help you calculate the total amount of watts needed to run your rig.  Try that before investing in more money.  Hope this helps.

i measured the temps outside of gaming

i'm using a 750, which should be plenty for an i5, 1 SSD, 3 EIDEs, and an ATI 5770...i think

just using a Coolermaster evo 212, which is supposed to sufficient to cool an i5

Faulty memory can cause reboots or BSODs. Go to http://www.memtest.org and download a CD-ROM image (ISO file) of this memory testing tool, burn to CD-ROM, boot off of it and let it run at least 1 iteration of memory testing.

yeah, saw that suggestion in some of the forum posts i read also

i'll get on it and see what kind of results i get

update:

so it seems i'm able to play certain games w/o restarts

i played Civ 4 for hours yesterday, no problems with restarts

15 minutes into Warlock: Master of the Arcane, restart...10 min into Expeditions: Conquistador, restart

flash games, no restarts

i'm guessing CPU/GPU intensive games cause my restarts, but neither Warlock nor Expeditions look like they use alot of either....*shrugs*

You might consider changing the power source to a higher power one.

when restarts happen, i check these in this order

1. heat!
2. drivers
3. power supply
4. RAM
5. motherboard+cpu.

Look at your event viewer for bugcheck ID 0x00000116 or similar having to do with graphics display error. If you find such, then update your graphic driver to the latest version.

current is a 750...no friekin way 1 SSD and 3 IDE HDs need more than that much power

i finally found some time to do more troubleshootin g

pulled my RAM and tested each stick, both work fine

took out my video card, and, voila! no more restarts (been 2 days now, i'll keep monitoring the situation)

my Q is, the card was working fine with my old system, no problems whatsoever

why the hell is it malfunctioning in this system? did i damage it somehow when i pulled it from the old system? is my power supply unable to keep up with its demands? is there too much dust clogging it up? is it somehow incompatible with my mobo or OS? was it just time for it to die, slowly?

who knows, i'm just glad it stopped restarting
