NYC Asian subway rider chases down random attacker after being slashed in face with razor: ‘I couldn’t stay put’
An Asian victim of a scary subway slashing said his attacker didn’t say a word before slicing him across the face at a Manhattan station Sunday morning.
The 39-year-old victim was riding a J train pulling into the Delancey St.-Essex St. station on the Lower East Side when the assailant raked a razor across the man’s face without warning about 8:20 a.m. Sunday, cops said.
“He didn’t say anything,” the victim said. “He walked past me and then he cut my face.”
The victim, who did not want to be identified, refused medical attention.
“I’m fine,” the victim said. “It was just a minor cut.”
But it was a major scare. Luckily the victim was on an elevated train and able to call for help.
“I was on the bridge going to Essex station,” he said. “I was calling 911 and asking (another rider) to take pictures of him.”
He followed the attacker and pointed him out to cops, who arrested Brendan Dowling, 40, and charged him with felony assault and tampering with evidence. Cops recovered the razor, which they said Dowling threw on the subway tracks.
The NYPD’s Hate Crime Task Force was notified of the attack because the victim is Asian, a police source said. Dowling was not immediately charged with a hate crime.
“The guy is caught so that’s good,” the victim said. “I chased this guy down. The guy was running away so I couldn’t stay put. I just wanted him to get caught because he attacked me.”
Dowling, who lives in the Bronx, has prior arrests for assault.
“He didn’t have a big knife so I was lucky,” the victim said. ”I rode the train for 30 years and this is the first time. So maybe there is a crime issue.”
