...relocate me for an assignment. They not only supply a place for me to stay for the duration of that assignment but can also accommodate my wife and child as well if the assignment is long enough and if they want to come along. 

My boss told me that it's cheaper transfer me to a different area for an assignment than to hire a permanent employee to do the same job there.

And yes, I've turned down some assignments and/or areas. When that happens, my boss gets the next person down the seniority list. I'm not at the top but I'm on the upper tier of the seniority list so I can say no most of time. 

I've only been transferred a few times in the last 20 years or so ....so not too bad overall.
