It's rattlesnake season in California: How to avoid and respect this snake — or eat it

Can you kill, eat a rattlesnake if you find one in your house?

In California, a person may kill a rattlesnake without a permit or license, Foy said.

A law was enacted specifically so property owners can protect themselves, he said. While rattlesnakes are beneficial to the environment — eating mice and other rodents — if they settle under or next to your house they could bite curious children or pets. There’s a bag limit of two rattlesnakes per day per person, he said.

When killing them, do it quickly for your own safety and to be as humane as possible.

"Most people smack them with the back side of a shovel,” Foy said, but you have to hit them hard on the head to kill them.
