Back in 2015, SF trying to go woke and pushed the "Equity" narrative but it didn't turn out what they had hope for...
Back story:
SF was seeing high failures in higher math for middle school from the black and brown community while Asian/White students doing much much better and more of them were in AP classes in high school. To combat this disparity, SF decided to remove it from middle school and only allow it to be taught at the high school level, hoping to get black and brown the same starting level as Asian/White. So, in 2015 they launched "Algebra for All" which removed Algebra from middle school and only offered it in high school starting in 9th grade, they emphasized that taking algebra in middle school is unambiguously harmful to marginalized people (mainly black and brown).
Almost a decade later... it failed miserably. Data from 23,000 students revealed that the failures and enrolled in AP classes remained virtually unchanged... black and brown students enrolled in AP math (pre-cal, cal, etc etc) were still less than 10% just like before. The only thing it achieved was lowering the enrollments for math in high school: geometry fell from 52% to 5%, Pre-cal went from 41% to 16%... algebra did increase in 9th grade by 53%, however, by the 10th grade, enrollment in Algebra II dropped by 38%.
What the data showed is that leveling the playing field had null affect on marginalized student (black and brown). Furthermore, additional analyses and anecdotal reports provide evidence that the reform is exacerbating inequalities—as families with resources now enroll their students in more expensive tutoring, summer courses, and private schools to accelerate their child’s learning.
