Trump signed an Executive Order on May 9, 2025, aiming to transform the West Los Angeles VA campus into a "National Center for Warrior Independence" focused on housing and supporting homeless veterans. It will be one of the largest homeless veterans housing facility in the country.
The goal is to establish a national center on the West LA VA campus to provide housing and support services to homeless veterans. Up to 6000 homeless vets will be housed there by January 1, 2028. The center will provide housing, substance abuse treatment, and support for veterans to regain self-sufficiency. This campus was originally to be used for veterans but in recent, parts of it were being leased to UCLA's baseball team, a wealthy private school and private companies uses. This EO not only ended these shady deals but also redirect funds previously allocated to housing or services for undocumented immigrants towards the center's development. It directs the Department of Housing and Urban Development to utilize housing vouchers to support veterans in this effort.
The order also seeks to increase accountability within the VA, including addressing misconduct and improving healthcare access.
It aims to reduce wait times for healthcare appointments through options like expanded hours and virtual healthcare.
In essence, the Executive Order represents a significant step towards addressing veteran homelessness and transforming the West LA VA campus into a national hub for veteran support and housing.
