The gist...
4 cops stop at a Chick-Fil-A... the first three cops were White and the 4th was Black. They ordered their food and was given free meal except the Black cop had to pay for his - not the other three White cops. Sgt. Reid says he was upset and humiliated for the blatant racism.
“I was kind of humiliated and embarrassed, you know, at the whole situation because it seemed like it was a, it seemed like it was a racial issue to me,” Sgt. Tracy Reid told the station. He said the three white officers were offered a complimentary meal – something the fast-food chain often does for law enforcement – but he had to pay. “It infuriated me,” one of his fellow officers said. “And I told him, I said, ‘Do you want me to go say something?’ And he was like, ‘No, I don’t want you to; I don’t want you to cause a scene.’ But I could tell by the way he looked that, you know, he just looked down at his plate, and he looked really embarrassed and humiliated.” Reid wrote a letter demanding that Chick-fil-A retrain employees and strengthen policies on civil rights compliance.
What he got instead was two cards for free meals and an explanation that it was a mistake – that the employee doesn’t normally work behind the register.
“They said that it was perceived that we were embarrassed or that it was a racial incident, which I didn’t like because I know it wasn’t perceived – it was,” the other White officer said.
“He’s not the only one who perceived it,” he said. “We all perceived it that way. And it’s not even perception. It’s what happened. It was a racial issue.” -WRDW

What the reporting media didn't tell it's viewer is that the first three White cops were served by a cashier that was training a newbie... but when the Black cop came up to order, another cashier took his order. Thus he was made to pay and the other cops didn't have to pay... I'm not sure if this 'free' meal courtesy was part of this particular Chick-Fil-A restaurant or not. But Reed said it himself during an interview...
"Uh, we all got in the same line and we all, uh, ordered the food. I was the last one to to place my order. The other officers had their orders taken by the cashier who was training someone. When it was my turn, someone else stepped in. When I came up to the register, uh, when he came to the register, he took my order and, um, and I paid... I had to pay for my food."So, is it racism or is it just untrained cashier? I would say it's racism if the same cashier was serving all 4 of them. But two different cashier was serving these cops - just happened that the Black cop was last and was served by a different cashier from the other three.
Best way to resolved this... no more courtesy free meals to anyone including cops.
I remember a similar incident happened to me back in the early 2000s... a bunch of my co-workers (all White - male and female) went to a restaurant for lunch. The waitress came and got everyone's order except me... she started with the person on the right of me and ended with the person on the left of me. After she went away... I jokingly said that I was not served probably because I'm Asian and we all laughed... seconds later, the waitress came back and took my order. She apologized and said that she thought she started with me hence she ended the order with the person next to me.
