IT people, please share what you do
« on: April 29, 2010, 09:31:07 PM »
I would like to get to know other Hmong IT out there.  So, I'm curious as to what kind of work you guys are doing.  I know Jetter is a software engineer but I sense he is in the Web enterprise application development.  Sunv8 is a manager for a famous hardware and software company.    I'm also in the IT field but my limited experience has been in the research and development at a small company.  I was in marketing for a while for a company before it was recently bought by Oracle.   Is there anyone working in hard core software company like Adobe, HP, Intel, Google, Microsoft, and a few others?  Let's network.   There's a possibility that I may intern for HP this summer most likely for a research/development position.  My backup plan is an internship at a biotech company cooking some customized software for their research group.

IT Specialist for a small nonprofit organization in Sacramento, CA.  We only have three IT staff supporting about 180 staff. We all have our own specialty but can do most other jobs also. I am actually the backup and server specialist, but do a lot of installs and setups also. Our projects range from cabling buildings to installing video equipment in observation rooms. A recent project i had was installing and migrating our users from Exchange 2003 to 2007. I have been in IT for 5 years now.

IMO, you need to get large enterprise level experience so you can make more $$.  Just my .02

It would be great to work for a large enterprise, but with large enterprise comes big sacrifices in flexibility and more stress. More money doesn't always equal more happiness.

I used to be into IT too...  Worked for Exodus Communications back when they were 1/4 the Internet and the fastest growing web hosting company in the world and the only company to ever have 3 stock splits in one year.  I worked as a contractor for NEC Technologys at the same time.  Then after Exodus failed, I went to work for an R&D division of Minolta, the imaging company, who merged with Konica and became Konicaminolta.   After 5 years there I got sick of R&D work and deadlines, etc so I just quit.  Now I'm working for the County as an IT manager and I'm very, very happy.  No need for such hard work anymore.  I'm sick of it all.

It's nice to know you who have more experiences in the IT field.  I'm just a Network Tech but my duty is as much as the Network Administrator and I'm working for a graduate school now.
