Anyone using Open Office?
« on: December 07, 2010, 11:13:35 AM »
Just need something to do simply word processing/typing.

Should I fork out $100+ for MS Office or just get Open Office?

Share your review/recommendation.

Thanks.

Open office is very good if you just want to type, word processing.  It's simple to use and best of all it's FREE...

Yeah that's the thing I don't want to use open office. It would suck having to reformat everything when opening/using the document in msoffice.  :'(

Hope someone else can chime in on this issue.

Open office is a great open source application.  I never had any issues with moving from openoffice to MSoffice.  So I can't really help on the point.

I use it.  I use mostly OpenOffice Word, and OpenOffice Impress.

Well, my use of it is very different.  I used it mainly for printing web pages.  I would copy content from webpages and paste into OpenOffice and print from there.  I don't use OpenOffice as a word processor because in my writing, I use what's called LaTex which produce high quality document.  The problem is that LaTex is not WYSIWYG.  It's similar to a markup language.

But I do use OpenOffice for presentation.  I could use LaTex which could pronounce high quality slides but the work require is too much.  I do notice that complex slides and large number of slides affect the performance of OpenOffice Impress.  But it does get the job done.  OpenOffice is more similar to Office 2003.

Besides nothing beats $0.  Some may say Microsoft Office is also $0 if you want to pirate.
