my budget is 600 excluding the monitor, mouse and keyboard.  anyone recommend Amd instead of Intel.  I find the hardware cheaper.

get a SSD, you'll never go back.  I only have the intel 80GB version and love the speed on my old dell desktop.

Yeah, if your budget is 600 then get AMD to save some money for a higher end graphics card and RAM. Remember, having more cores doesn't equate to better gaming. Look for higher clock speed.

Built it for my son.  I thought the price was fair for a good computer.  He plays COD and Crysis with flying colors...

$600 seems a bit tight. Sure you can build a system to run most newer games, but don't get your hopes up too high about setting the graphics to medium/high. Recently built a system for my bro which consisted of an AMD quadcore with 8 gigs of ram, GTX460 and i don't think it's even all that.  Turn on AA/AF+supersampling and other eye candy stuff and it will start to struggle in games like crysis II. Cost my bro around $1000.
