MOUNTAIN VIEW — A San Mateo man has been identified as the motorist killed Friday when his Tesla Model X crashed at the Highway 101 and Highway 85 connector, authorities said.

Wei Huang, 38, was traveling in the carpool lane of southbound 101 around 9:30 a.m. that morning when he collided with the barrier separating his lane from the Highway 85 flyover carpool lane, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The impact caused Huang’s vehicle to catch fire, the CHP said. Moments later, an approaching Mazda and Audi hit the 2017 Tesla.

Huang was pulled from his vehicle and rushed to Stanford Hospital, where he died from his injuries that afternoon, the CHP said.

Officer Art Montiel said Monday that the precise cause of the crash remains under investigation. The other two motorists who hit the Tesla were not injured.

The crash site limited traffic access for several hours in part because of caution used in evaluating the Tesla’s battery, which had become exposed by the collision. Road crews were back at the site Monday to make repairs to the freeway connector.

Anyone with information about Friday’s collision can contact CHP Officer Juan Garcia at 650-369-6261.

The thing with electric vehicle is the fire issue.  Not enough years to conclude the safety of these vehicles.  Batteries are known to explode or catches fire.

I know exactly where that collusion is at.  Sad story and Tesla needs to fix and make their cars more safer but would we willing to pay more for those added features?

Hope they don't close down the Tesla plant.  My boys jobs on the line

No way in hell when a head-on collision happens, lithium-ion is anymore susceptible to fire than the traditional internal combustion gas engine. Basically, a fancy term for controlled explosions. The cars we drive, we sit on a chair strapped on top of a gas tank and in front of us is an engine with spark plugs and small explosions used to propel 1,000lbs+ vehicles. Literally speaking, the gas is the fuel, the vehicle internals and interior are the tinder and kindling, all we need is a flame LOL

it sounds like operator's fault, driver's negligence.  he should collect money from his own car insurance, not the manufacturer.

So how many of those gas combustion vehicles when in an accident causes a kaboom?  Small percentage and we have the data.  With electric vehicles, the first one caught on fire and the world goes mad.  Lack of data.

My engineers I talked to at the charging station plus a close buddy of mine just bought a chevy volt.  All leased their vehicles.  I asked why?  All said the same thing.  Not trusting the reliability of an electric car to own one.  Leasing is the way to go just in case the technology fails in three years.

The gun didn't shoot anyone until the person pull the trigger. The car didn't kill anyone until he wrecked it.

Investigation still on going but I still think Wei's family will get a good chunk of money from Tesla once the dust settles and the flames stop burning... ??? :

TESLA NOW HAS another fatality to hang on its semi-autonomous driving system. The company just revealed that its Autopilot feature was turned on when a Model X SUV slammed into a concrete highway lane divider and burst into flames on the morning of Friday, March 23. The driver, Wei Huang, died shortly afterwards at the hospital.

This is the second confirmed fatal crash on US roads in which Tesla’s Autopilot system was controlling the car. It raises now familiar questions about this novel and imperfect system, which could make driving easier and safer, but relies on constant human supervision.

In a blog post published this evening, Tesla says the logs in the car’s computer show Autopilot was on, with the adaptive cruise control distance set to the minimum. The car stays in its lane and a fixed distance from the vehicle ahead, but the driver is supposed to keep his hands on the wheel and monitor the road, too. Take your hands off the wheel for too long, and you get a visual warning, on the dashboard. Ignore that, and the system will get your attention with a beep. If you’re stubborn or incapacitated, the car will turn on its flashers and slow to a stop.

Tesla elon musk just kicked his vp of operations to the side and now taken over the Fremont plant.  They say this is a front from all that is happening plus they are still behind on their production of the model 3.

Do you know how much they start for a programmer? I want to send them my resume.

Lithium Ion batteries when exposed to oxygen have the potential to accelerate into a thermal runway.  Look it up.

Last update I heard about this case is that there is another tesla driver who drove the same route and at the same exact spot, his telsa auto pilot started to swerve.  Found out that the car auto pilot system had a problem with the lines on the road.  It was drawn wrong.

Perhaps china man can sue tesla and tesla will recover the money from cal tran for wrongful death suit.
