There are retractable handles that shorten to 4’ and extend to 6’ or 7’or so. Shortened for transport; extended for netting. There are also longer ones that are solid one piece handle. 6’ or 7’ is good enough. Too long is too awkward. Get them early at Marine General in Duluth. They run out every spring for late comers.

Lester River on the edge of town is the favorite. Right at the mouth where it meets Lake Suprior.

How long of a dip net pole do you need??
And where along the river? Share google map?

You go right into the water. It’s knee level you submerge in; don’t go deeper than that or you’ll  lose your balance then. The smelts run up to the shallows more.

Nothing to fear. It’s easy. I’ve seen short Asian women dip very well and safely there.

That's because they don't want you and your wife to spend a whole week free at their place. One should not be a burden to someone else when one is trying to get one's own fun somewhere.

Consider getting your own motel for a weekend for smelting.

Both duluth and superior is closed to outsider
Only “local residents” that lives in the county

Duluth officials Friday said they will allow “local residents” access to beaches and other waterfront areas but only if people are keeping their social distance from each other.

“Smelting is traditionally combined with large gatherings that do not conform with the CDC’s social distancing guidelines,” Duluth Parks and Recreation Manager Jessica Peterson said in a statement. “Area locals may continue to smelt, but they must practice social distancing and respect standard beach closure times of 10 p.m. during the smelt run.”

DNR tells me that the City of Duluth can control Park Point but not the streams that flow into Lake Superior. So, smelting by all is permitted at the streams still.

Dib netting it is, HmgRock.

That DNR probably get pay $12/hour
A lot of them don’t know what they are talking about
All stream are public even on private land (i know from trout fishing)

City officials say only LOCAL RESIDENTS can smelt
They probably going be out there checking ID
And controlling access points
STRAIGHT FROM THE HORSE MOUTH

don’t do it
Those $1000 fine ain’t worth it
