A few weeks ago, I was attending a traditional Hmong funeral. A clan member, whom I call "Hlob" had lived up to 110. Not his real age, but a estimation, since the elders don't keep track of DOB's back then..haha
He's the last of what would had been my Grandfather's "generation", and outlived some of his own children who are my pap's generation. I remember him once saying to my pap, that his secret to long life was because he always mostly always do the right thing so that when it is his time, if has no sons left around, then for my pap as a "son" to just do what is the most simple, cheapest.
He still has two sons, and a lot of grandsons around my age...And well, they are a lot more whitewashed than I am....LOL but they still managed to give their grandfather a traditional celebration of life, but traditions were alter and modified in some form...LOL
Roast ducks, char sieu? and well, nobody in our younger generation clan knew how to play the qeej and drum. So they hired outside youngsters to do it...etc...For the chopping meat, good thing we have a few guys who are into hunting, so they got it under control...
As for me, I hope my presence alone was enough....Just to be there and show the youngsters, we really not going to continue tradtions into the future...or we really never gonna have a country....LOL just to be yourself, whatever you are comfortable with...I had on cowboy boots and hat....J/k LMAO but man, there's always that one elder who sports a cowboy hat at the funerals...LOL
