An incredible life, an amazing woman Nearly 50 years after fleeing Laos and arriving in Missoula, a Hmong woman celebrates her 100th birthday

Nearly 50 years after Xong Xiong left her home country of Laos amid the turmoil following the Vietnam War, the Missoula resident will celebrate her 100th birthday on Saturday surrounded by family and friends. Like many Hmong people, Xiong doesn't know her exact age, but she turned 100, or close to it, on June 6.

Hundreds gathered at the Missoula Cemetery in May 1982 for the final rites of a traditional Hmong funeral ceremony for Jerry Daniels. The wreath arrangement on the coffin, provided by a family friend from Ovando, remained intact when Daniels' remains were temporarily disinterred in October 2017. (Courtesy of Daniels family)
