Viral Olympic breakdancer Raygun says 'hate' over her performance has been 'devastating'

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z7Ohove06Do

Rachael Gunn, the Australian breakdancer known as Raygun, is speaking out after her 2024 Paris Olympics performance went viral and was mocked both online and off.

Gunn, a 36-year-old college professor with a Ph.D. in cultural studies, said in a new video posted on Instagram Thursday that the "hate" she has received has been "devastating."

"I just want to start by thanking all the people who have supported me. I really appreciate the positivity, and I'm glad I was able to bring some joy into your lives. That's what I hoped," Gunn said in the video, her first since competing in Paris. "I didn't realize that that would also open the door to so much hate, which has frankly been pretty devastating."

Gunn did not earn a medal in Paris, where she competed against fellow b-girls in their late teens and early 20s.

Thousands Reportedly Sign Petition to Hold Raygun Accountable for “Unethical Conduct”

Today in Raygun news, Us Weekly reports that thousands of people have signed a Change.org petition accusing the Australian breakdancer, as well as AOC’s Anna Meares, of "unethical" behavior.

In a letter addressed to the Prime Minister of Australia and the Australian Olympic Committee, Raygun (aka Rachel Gunn) is accused by critics of manipulating the Olympic selection process to her “own advantage” by setting up her “own governing body for breakdancing” and overlooking other qualified breakdancers. The letter also includes unverified claims that Raygun denied funding to a “group of incredibly talented and underprivilege d youth” and alleges that Raygun defeated “phenomenal breakdancers” and won her “own qualifier.”

Signatories of the petition are calling for full investigation, a public apology from Raygun and Meares for “attempting to gaslight the public and undermining the efforts of genuine athletes,” and a “global public apology to the breaking community for the unethical behavior that has tainted this sport.”

The letter ends with: “Australia must do better by its athletes and ensure that the principles of fairness, transparency, and integrity are upheld in all aspects of Olympic selection.”

So far, it doesn’t seem as though Raygun or Meares have responded, but Raygun defended her performance during a press conference on August 10, saying, “I was never going to beat these girls on what they do best—their power moves. What I bring is creativity. All of my moves are original. Creativity is really important to me. I go out there, and I show my artistry. Sometimes it speaks to the judges, and sometimes it doesn’t. I do my thing, and it represents art. That is what it is about.”

Viral Olympic B-Girl Raygun Offers Blunt Quote About Not Scoring a Single Vote in Breaking

Wearing an Australian hat and warm-up jump suit, Raygun lost her three round-robin dance battles 18–0, 18–0 and 18–0 to bow out of the Olympics without earning a vote from the panel of nine judges, who were grading each dancer on musicality, vocabulary, technique, execution and originality.

I breakdance a little bit back I'm the day.  My uncle and cousin were Wizards.  I knew a few Smurf, Puppet Masters, and Mystic Motions.  Good days.
