Power Rangers Writer Admits Casting Black and Asian Actors as Black Ranger and Yellow Ranger Was ‘Such a Mistake’
Walter Emanuel Jones played Zack Taylor, the Black Ranger, and Thuy Trang played Trini Kwan, the Yellow Ranger
In the third episode of Investigation Discovery's new docuseries Hollywood Demons, titled “Dark Side of the Power Rangers,” Power Rangers head writer Tony Oliver addressed the controversy around the casting of a Black actor and an Asian actress as the Black and Yellow Rangers, respectively
Oliver claimed they weren’t thinking about “stereotypes” and didn’t realize the unfortunate connection at first
Oliver said the decision was “such a mistake"
Though fans might happily remember watching the '90s favorite Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, things were more complicated behind the scenes.
The April 7 episode of Investigation Discovery's new docuseries Hollywood Demons, titled “Dark Side of the Power Rangers,” takes a new look at the iconic series, which premiered in 1993. The show aired on Fox Kids and followed a group of teenagers who become rangers to help protect the Earth.
But the show was criticized by viewers for how the Rangers' colors were assigned: Walter Emanuel Jones, who is Black, played Zack Taylor, the Black Ranger, and Thuy Trang, who was Vietnamese, played Trini Kwan, the Yellow Ranger.
In Hollywood Demons, former Power Rangers head writer Tony Oliver said that while making the show, "None of us are thinking stereotypes.” He explained, “It was my assistant who pointed it out in a meeting one day, that we had made the Black character the Black Ranger and the Asian character the Yellow Ranger.”

IDK….I guess when I was a kid, I just watched it. Never once, I would have thought of that. Now, maybe so. Good day everyone!

How the world have changed. This was before Woke culture and adding more alphabets or animals to the LGBTABCZ groups.
This was when I can call my black friend as the N word but today, I might lose my job over it due to everyone be on their phone and filming the incident for tiktoc and social media.
Like WTF? He-man didn't even wear a shirt
