I don't even think we had to check our luggage in once??

But for those that do, watch out for this scam...

Travelers Are Being Warned About a New Luggage Scam That Could Lead to Arrests Abroad—Here’s How to Protect Yourself

Authorities say criminals are swapping baggage tags to attach innocent passengers to drug-smuggling operations

When you leave your luggage at the airport bag drop the agent will typically ask you two questions as they attach the barcoded bag tag to your suitcase: "Did you pack this bag yourself?" and "Has it remained in your possession at all times since it was packed?"

But those questions matter very little if after you leave your bag and head to security, an airport worker removes your bag tag and attaches it to another suitcase. And it can be serious when the bag that now has your name on it is stuffed full of drugs.

The travel scandal has affected 17 known travelers on international flights originating in Canada in the last year, according to Canada’s CTV News. In the worst cases, the flights are bound for destinations where drug smuggling carries the death penalty. So far, the cases have involved flights from Canada to Paris, the Dominican Republic, New Zealand, Germany, Bermuda, Morocco, the Philippines, and Korea. Travelers are sometimes handcuffed, arrested, and even jailed. So far the affected travelers were all eventually released.

In addition to the 17 known travelers who were victims of this drug smuggling scheme, it is expected that many more have been affected unknowingly. It is believed that the drug smugglers hide tracking devices, like AirTags, in the bags of drugs, so that they can track the luggage and pick it up upon arrival. If the bag is intercepted and the drugs are found, the innocent passenger whose name is on the bag tag faces the consequences. In the best cases, that means being detained, and in the worst, it means jail time in a foreign country that has strict punishments for drug smuggling.

In connection with these bag tag swaps, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police have arrested six baggage and ramp workers at Toronto Pearson International Airport in the last year.

How to protect yourself from this travel scheme
In order to prove that the bag with your name on it isn’t yours, authorities recommend taking a photo of your bag at the airport, or even a photo or video of your bag being weighed at the baggage drop since proof of its original weight will also reveal if anything was added to your bag after check-in.

You can also put a luggage tracker, like an AirTag, in your bag so you can prove where your real bag is.
