Hmong American Sportsmen Club hosts first WI-DNR Learn-To-Hunt Squirrel Program
Keeping the tradition alive
September 10th, 2011

Sheboygan, WI – The Hmong American Sportsmen Club (HASC) launched just over a year ago with many goals and missions, knowing it was going to be a long, rough road ahead. A dozen members consisting of generations of family and friends who have a passion for the outdoors started the club. Last fall HASC teamed up with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources for a Learn to Hunt pheasant program, which turnout out to be such a success HASC decided to make the Learn to Hunt program an annual event; with this year’s first Learn to Hunt squirrel program in the state of Wisconsin.

“Squirrel hunting is the single most popular game animal in the Hmong community, even bigger than deer hunting. Our purpose of this learn to hunt is not only to keep the tradition alive with the next generation of Hmong hunters, but to educate these young hunters with all the sights and sounds the forest has to offer,” said Addison Lee, Club President of the Hmong American Sportsmen Club.

Many of the mentors and students headed out in the darkness of the forest hoping to harvest a squirrel or two. As the morning was filled with many sightings of squirrels, only a handful of students had the opportunity to harvest squirrels. Meeting back at the Hmong Mutual Assistants Association building in Sheboygan, WI; mentors and students gathered to share their stories of the morning hunt while eating lunch.

A total of five squirrels were harvested by the students, as well as a lifetime of memories with their first squirrel.
