Just went to a bay area Chinese grocery and smelt is about 2.99 a lbs. They had a few pieces on a yellow meat tray for $4.99 already. And here I thought, you guys be scooping them in by the buckets.
You know my family was a commercial Fisher back in the 80's of the Narleans days. We would catch whatever that was profitable and when we dock, we sell it all to a cannery nearby for wholesale prices. They then process it, inflate the prices for cost with fuel for transportation and taxes and you would see them in your local grocery.
I was just a child at the time and was able to get on a few trips. They would drop a big net and drive like 40mph fast and it would pick up whatever it catches. We were going for shrimps as that was where the money was at. If you have a 200k yatch, you go for the bigger money...tuna
My job was the sorter guy. Small medium large I would separate them shrimps into bins. All others like fishes, gets thrown back with exception for good meat fishes, we save some for dinner or to bring home to give friends as gifts. Blue crabs we kept for we gave it to this white guy who owns a house by the river. In return, we get free parking pass to dock on his property.
