Story written in 1905: In "The Gift of the Magi," a couple in their 20s had no money to buy each other Christmas gifts. So, on Christmas Eve, the wife secretly sold her beautiful long hair at a hair shop for $20.00 and bought a gold watch chain to go with her husband's chain-less watch that he always loved.
At dinner that night, the husband came home and the wife pleaded him not to get mad at her.
“...Be good to me, because I sold it for you. Maybe the hairs of my head could be counted,”
she said, “but no one could ever count my love for you...”
I'm not going to tell you what the husband got his wife. I don't want to spoil the story.
